Canada and EU Data Flagship Collaboration

Posted by Jaq-Lin Larder on March 5, 2018 in Research Funding

CIHR and the European Commission have issued a call for proposals for a jointly-funded Flagship Collaboration for human data storage, integration and sharing.

The goal of this funding opportunity is to build a collaboration of stakeholders in Europe and Canada in the domain of repositories storing and sharing human – omics data that will create a framework for long-term cooperation. In order to do so, this program aims to enhance and standardize data deposition, curation and exchange procedures, thus ensuring better data reuse and increased benefit to the scientific communities worldwide.

In order to apply, research consortia must be comprised of legal entities in at least three different member states or associated countries of the EU, along with at least one legal entity in Canada. Project consortia may include other international partners, and SME participation is encouraged.

Canadians participating in successful projects will be funded via CIHR Team Grants. The total amount available to Canadian researchers for this funding opportunity is CAD $5,500,000, enough to fund up to 7 Team Grants. The maximum amount per grant is $200,000 per year for up to 4 years for a total of $800,000, per grant.  Overall, it is expected that successful projects will be funded in the range of EUR 4 - 6 million.

Canadian applicants must liaise with their lead European partner, who will submit a full application to the European Commission. Canadian applicants must also complete a CIHR application and submit it through ResearchNet. The purpose of this additional application to CIHR is to provide CIHR with an Operating Budget for the project (with the amounts quoted in Canadian dollars, and a complete justification for funds requested) and a one page research summary.

Any faculty member interested in this opportunity is asked to contact the International Research Facilitator (jennifer.morawiecki@dal.ca) for more information and support in preparing an application.

Deadline is April 18, 2018
