Big Data Congress: Oceans and Earth

Posted by Suman Jha on October 10, 2017 in Events

This year’s Big Data Congress, with the theme Oceans & Earth, is taking place in Halifax November 7th to 9th. Over 30 regional and global leading thinkers and innovators will be there to talk about and inspire conversations about the impact of big data on our oceans and agriculture industries. You will also see real-world examples of data technology working in Atlantic Canada.

The morning session will explore Visual Analytics with Dr. Fernando Paulovich, Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in Data Visualization at the Faculty of Computer Science, Dalhousie University, and head of the Visualization and Visual Analytics (VVA) lab. Learn how to analyze, interact with and gain insight from data through visualization, and if and how visualizing Big Data is different. Using popular visualization tools, Dr. Paulovich will use examples from his work to demonstrate how the tools have been applied. The discussion will include the uncertainty in data, how to provide context for insights drawn from the visual analysis, and how big data tools are incorporated into the visual analytics process.

In the afternoon, join Dr. Srini Sampalli in a session on the Internet of Things (IoT). Dr. Sampalli is a Professor and 3M National Teaching Fellow in the Faculty of Computer Science at  Dalhousie University, specializing in cyber technologies, the Internet of Things and cyber security. This session will discuss the components required to monitor, process, analyze, and finally to act based on near real time data being generated from IoT devices, and how to put these components together to function in a nearly automated way.

Also be sure to catch the Big Ideas Forum sponsored by Springboard Atlantic and NSERC taking place during the conference on November 6th from 5:00-7:00pm. This event is free of charge, and brings together conference participants, companies and researchers interested in developing new ideas and collaborations. See some new research projects, participate in round tables and hear about some innovative new uses of big data.
