Have you seen the Global Health Planning Grants funding opportunity? The deadline for applications is fast approaching!

CIHR Application Deadline:
2017-08-22
Anticipated Notice of Decision: 2017-10-24
Anticipated Funding Start Date: 2017-11-01

CIHR’s Institutes of Population and Public Health (IPPH) and Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (IMHA), in collaboration with CIHR’s Institutes of Health Services and Policy Research (IHSPR) and Infection and Immunity (III), are pleased to be welcoming applications forPlanning Grants on Global Health Research.

The program provides funding for planning activities/events that facilitate the development of partnerships, teams and/or grant applications for larger-scale research projects that could subsequently be funded by CIHR or other funders.

Our Institutes’ collective priority for this funding call is to support research that is of particular concern to the global community.  Applications must also align with the Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research’s Principles for Global Health Research as appropriate, and must be relevant to at least one of the following global health research priorities:
· Explaining patterns of health, health equity and well-being within a global context or as shaped by global economic, social, environmental and political factors;
· Improving health equity for people living in low- or middle-income countries or of vulnerable populations such as Indigenous peoples in multiple international settings; and/or
· Addressing transnational health threats, opportunities, determinants or solutions.

In addition to aligning with the global health research priorities, this funding opportunity has earmarked some funds to support research on arthritis, oral health, skin and musculoskeletal health –which includes prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) via promotion of physical activity and/or reduction of sedentary behaviour. For more information about the kinds of physical inactivity and NCD challenges that we’re hoping researchers will address with the earmarked funds, please see the WHO’s factsheet.

The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $440,000, enough to fund approximately 22 grants for up to 1 year. Individual grants are valued at up to $20,000. Of those funds, $200,000 has been reserved for research on arthritis, oral health, skin conditions and musculoskeletal health. Finally, a minimum of 5 grants will be reserved for New Investigators who are within 5 years of their first academic or research appointment and who have never previously held a CIHR operating grant, including Project or Foundation grants, as Nominated Principal Applicant. New Investigators who have been the Nominated Principal Applicant of priority-driven CIHR grants (e.g., planning grants, catalyst grants, training grants, knowledge translation grants, salary awards) are eligible for this funding pool.
