The Climate Change and Emissions Management Corporation (CCEMC) announces a new competition, with $65 million in funding available for projects to help Alberta reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with a maximum of $25 million per project.
 
Projects will focus on energy efficiency and conservation, carbon capture and storage, or cleaner energy production and utilization. The technology development and small demonstration projects can occur anywhere in the world, so long as the development is suitable for Alberta. Applicants will need to demonstrate the suitability of the technology and describe how it will be transferred to Alberta during or after the project. Large demonstration and deployment projects must take place in Alberta to be considered for funding. Please see the attached press release for more information.
 
The proceeds from Alberta’s $15/tonne carbon price do not go into general revenues but rather into a fund to support the discovery, development and deployment of clean technologies. Since June 2010, the Climate Change and Emissions Management Corporation (CCEMC) has funded 89 projects with grants of $234 million. Funding by the CCEMC is not limited to organizations in Alberta but is open to competitive bids from organizations anywhere in the world. The only stipulation for these grants is that the technology must be applicable in Alberta. Currently the CCEMC is in the middle of its $35 million international Grand Challenge that focuses on finding useful applications for captured carbon dioxide. On April 15 the first round finalists will be announced, each of which will receive $500,000 to continue to develop their technology. Subsequent finalists will receive greater sums, with the final winner receiving the $10 million grand prize.
