How to register

Follow these step-by-step instructions that will walk you through the process of registering for a course offered by the Faculty of Open Learning & Career Development. If you need help along the way, email openlearning@dal.ca

"Let's get you started" written on a black background, with the Dal crest in the top right corner. Watch our registration video for more detailed instructions.

Step 1: Creating your OPEN_X account

Before registering for a course, you’ll need to create an OPEN_X account.

  • To create an account, enter your preferred email address under ‘I am a new student’ on our student portal.

  • When you create your account, you will receive an email with the subject line, Dalhousie University New Account. Check your Junk folder for this email.

NOTE: If you're a current Dalhousie student, staff or faculty member, you will need to log in to the student portal with your NetID and create an OPEN_X account.

Step 2: Setting your password

Your username is auto-generated and will be included in the email, Dalhousie University New Account. Now, you will need to follow the link in the email and set your password. If you didn't receive the email, please contact openlearning@dal.ca.

Once you have set your password, you will receive an email with the subject line, Dalhousie University Password Changed. Check your Junk folder if you don't see the email in your inbox.

Forgot your username or password?

If at any time you forget your password or username, you can reset them by visiting the student portal.

Step 3: Registering for a course

Now that your OPEN_X account is created, you can log in to the student portal to register for your courses.

Wait. You may need a NetID

  • Some of our courses require access to our university libraries and IT services so you will also need a NetID.

  • If you register for a course that requires access to these university services, you will receive an email, Dalhousie University Login Information for Lifelong Learning Portal. Check your Junk folder if you don't see the email in your inbox. You will receive it in 1-2 business days requesting that you activate your NetID.

  • Once you activate your NetID, you will no longer need your OPEN_X account and you will only use your NetID to access your course.

Step 4: Paying for a course

  • Once you have added your course to your cart, you can check out and pay by credit card.

  • You will receive an email with the subject line, Notification of Payment, and a second email, Dalhousie University Confirmation. This second email will provide you with a receipt. Check your Junk folder if you don't see the email in your inbox.
  • We accept Visa, Mastercard, and Debit.
