As an adult now, I’m given a second chance to pursue my education the right way."

Redefining the Path: A Second Chance at STEM

After graduating from Citadel High School in Halifax without any science credits, Jason found himself drawn to the worlds of mathematics and computer science through independent research. While the passion was there, the academic prerequisites were missing.

"The UPrep program gave me the opportunity to gain the skills fundamental to access areas I’d never considered in secondary school," they shared. "As an adult now, I’m given a second chance to pursue my education the right way."

By enrolling in UPrep, he is currently mastering pre-calculus, a critical gatekeeper course for the Bachelor of Computer Science program at Dalhousie. His ultimate goal? To become a machine learning engineer, developing AI solutions for vital sectors like medical tech, fintech, and agriculture.

Breaking Down Financial Barriers

For many families, the cost of upgrading courses can be a major hesitation. The UPrep Bursary was created specifically to remove these hurdles, ensuring that financial status doesn't dictate a student's potential.

"Financially, it would’ve been unfeasible to take upgrading courses," Jason explained. "The bursary has given me the ability to access academic requirements for any degree specific prerequisites, without financial burden."

"Institutionally and culturally in Nova Scotia, there are issues with the education system, often mainly guiding the youth of these groups towards non-STEM pathways... This bursary helps correct that error and gives the option and access to many post-secondary programs."

Investing in Indigenous and African Nova Scotian Excellence

The UPrep Bursary provides dedicated support for Indigenous and African Nova Scotian students, acknowledging that systemic barriers have historically steered youth from these communities away from post-secondary studies.

"Institutionally and culturally in Nova Scotia, there are issues with the education system, often mainly guiding the youth of these groups towards non-STEM pathways," Jason noted. "This bursary helps correct that error and gives the option and access to many post-secondary programs."

Beyond the financial support, Dalhousie offers a robust ecosystem of societies and communities where students can find mentorship, socialize, and network within their chosen fields.
