Walk for Alzheimer's!

This weekend, some of the GMR team participated in the annual IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer's in downtown Halifax. This is Canada’s largest fundraiser for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, taking place in more than 150 communities across the country. This year, we raised $1,230 that will help fund local programs and services that improve quality of life for people living with dementia in our community.

Looking forward to next year!

Ken Rockwood Discusses SAFER-f

Dr. Rockwood spoke with the manager of the Integrated Access and Flow Network and SAFER-f lead about how frailty relates to the second “f” in implementing the SAFER-f Patient Flow Bundle (SAFER-f). SAFER-f is a set of simple rules for adult inpatient wards to improve patient flow, prevent unnecessary waiting for patients, decrease length of stay, and improve patient outcomes. Frailty is a robust predictor of poor health outcomes that matter to patients and health care systems. About one-third of Nova Scotians over the age of 65 are frail. If all elements of the SAFER-f Patient Flow Bundle are undertaken on a regular basis, patient care experiences will be improved by reducing unnecessary waiting, unnecessary hospital harm or loss of independence.

Ken Rockwood on Frailty in Canada

As Canada’s population ages, it is expected that more people will become frail. Individuals living with frailty have an increased risk of hospitalizations, longer hospital stays, hospital readmissions, emergency department visits, and in-hospital death. New data shows that more than one-third of all hospitalized older adults in Canada are at risk of frailty. On this episode of the Canadian Health Information Podcast, host Avis Favaro speaks with Dr. Kenneth Rockwood, clinical research professor of frailty and aging at Dalhousie University in Halifax, about the harms of frailty and what we can do to better protect older adults at risk.
