The Centre offers educational courses exploring the many special issues that affect family businesses, from management succession to conflict resolution and communication. Educational offerings are available for family businesses, advisors to family businesses and students.
Family businesses constitute a large part of the Atlantic Canadian economy and need to be supported by our educational system. Many Atlantic Canadian entrepreneurs are reaching retirement age and their businesses must be passed to the next generation or sold and the wealth eventually distributed to the next generation. Many families are not prepared for either alternative. Educational programs need to be developed to help with these transitions, both from a financial and a family dynamic perspective.
While professional firms meet many of the financial and structural needs of families going through these transitions, they are not always able to address the particularly sensitive issues that families face during a transfer of ownership or wealth. Also, the advisors may not be aware of the necessary governance structures that should be put in place to best manage the often competing priorities of business, family and personal needs. Professional advisors who deal with family transition need to be educated on the best practices developed in these areas.
In response to this need for education, the Centre offers courses exploring the many special issues that affect family businesses, from management succession to conflict resolution and communication.
