IPHE Wheelchair Mini Course

"This program has given me a new set of skills in my toolbox that, as a physiotherapy student, I will be able to implement into future practice. Not only were these sessions helpful in expanding my knowledge of wheelchair skills and involved training, they gave me an appreciation for working with different health professions. I now have an understanding of other scopes of practice and how the health care team can work together to get the best possible patient outcomes." Kate Johnson (Class of 2019)

The Class of 2019 dove head first into their third semester where they focused on Neuroscience and Neurotherapeutics to add many new skills to their tool boxes. The class has now returned from their Neuro placements. I am confident that every student had a tremendous experience and gained valuable knowledge that will help them prepare for the national exam and the work force. The Class of 2020 spent their first semester invested in Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy, Exercise Physiology and spending their time working in the cadaver lab, where the cadavers have been generously donated to provide the students for an in-depth anatomy experience.  Now into their second semester, the Class of 2020 is busy spending their time studying Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy.

Wondering what happened in the Fall Semester of 2018? Let’s take a look! Physiotherapy took part in the annual fundraising event, “For the Health of It” where the two classes raised money for Sea Star; a child and youth advocacy centre. This year the classes of 2019 and 2020 recreated the Wizard of Oz with a health centered twist. Huge thanks goes out to the FTHOI committee: Dan Mollins and Jill Dierijck (lead coordinators), Jill Dierijick, Olivia Grimshaw and Annelies Diepeveen (dance choreographers), Polly Miller and Shania Caravan (stunt coordinators), Heidi Kent and Jill Dierijck (script writers), Jill Dierijck, Carolyn Crane, Anna Stultz and Dan Mollins (props and costume managers), and Nathan Hart (backstage manager). Another huge thank you goes out to both of the classes as they volunteered a large amount of their time reading over scripts for the play, rehearsing their dance moves and practicing their stunts.

DRUUUM ROLL PLEASE… Physiotherapy took home the first place For the Health of It 2018 title along with the Top Fundraising Award (once again). Physiotherapy raised a grand total of roughly $7000. This could not have been possible without the hard working fundraising committee which consisted of Marika de Winter, Emily Blight, Angela Pope and Rebecca Chapman. Another shout out to all the students and professors who baked treats for the bake sale, and who participated in our annual “Pie the Prof”, where both the professors and students bid their hard earned cash to cover someone’s face full of dessert.

What better way to start 2019 than with a challenge? And what better challenge than The Women’s Health Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Associations 5th annual Valentine’s Day Challenge where we, along with physiotherapy students from universities and clinics across Canada, donated items for local women’s centres. Donations collected by the School of Physiotherapy students, faculty and staff where given in support of Adsum House, a local program that provides temporary assistance to women, children, and female youth in times of need.

With everyone back together in the Forrest Building, in between all the studying, preparation is now taking place for one of the largest events of the semester, the PT Ball! The night of “the Ball” is a great opportunity for the students, faculty and staff to get dressed to the nines and come together to enjoy a great meal, presentations, reminisce about the school year, and dance the night away. This night will be a night full of joy, laughter and a great last opportunity for the two classes and faculty to spend together before the Class of 2020 finishes their first year and head out on their placements.
