Spring 2022 Student News

By Katie Broussard

This winter semester has been a busy one for the students in the School of Physiotherapy! Everyone has been working hard and trying to stay safe as we continue to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic. Although restrictions have added to the complexity of being a master’s student in a skills-based program, the students have been up for the challenge.

The year ones began their second semester class in person in Halifax, taking Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy II, Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy II, Scientific Inquiry, and Exercise Physiology. They made it through these courses and finished up exams just in time to partake in their first year PT Ball that was held on March 25th at the Atlantica Hotel. This was a great opportunity for the class to come together and celebrate their achievements up to this point before heading off to go on placement. Each student will complete one 6-week placement in Atlantic Canada, where they will be entering facilities and getting hands-on practice in the areas of cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal physiotherapy. These placements will be staggered for students so that they occur between the end of March and the middle of June.

The second-year class had an opposite schedule, spending the first 3 months of the semester out on placement, with each student completing two 6-week placements in the areas of musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory, or neurotherapeutic physiotherapy. The year twos will be taking Scientific Inquiry II, Integrated Physiotherapy Practice, and Professional Issues in Physiotherapy as they head back for in-person classes and labs on March 28th. Second years will have their own PT Ball to look forward to, which is currently planned for May 14th. The next 3-4 months will mark the end of in-person classes for the second years, as the only degree requirements that they will have left after those courses will be clinical placements!

Both years are excited to see what’s next to come on their journeys to becoming licenced physiotherapists. Stay tuned to find out what the students are up to in the next issue of PT Matters!
