Winter 2015 Student News

Physiotherapy wins three-peat victory at 2014 For The Health Of It.

In early 2015, the first year students are currently busy ruling the floors of the Forrest Building as they focus on MSK in modules 3 and 5. The second year students were away on neurotherapeutic placements, masquerading as ‘grown ups’. A few things have happened since our last update, many fundraisers including bake sales, Pacifco nights, custom t-shirts and of course, the very top fundraisers ‘Shave For The Health Of It’ and ‘Pie Your Prof’. In it’s second year running, the ‘Shave For The Health Of It’ event, where several men of the MScPT classes offered up their precious locks as the class voted on wacky haircuts for them, provided the $2000 donation goal was reached.  Needless to say, these guys got some strange looks as the week went on. Once again, faculty and staff showed up for ‘Pie Your Prof,’ as several students and faculty members battled it out in a friendly bidding war over who was going to get a pie to the face. Let’s just say faculty took advantage of us poor students.

All fundraising efforts went to Regional Residential Services Society (RRSS), a local not-for-profit organization that supports adults with intellectual disabilities in a variety of residential settings, and the charity selected for this year’s  ‘For The Health Of It’.  The entire event was organized seamlessly by second year MScPT students Caitlyn Dunphy, Erin Chaisson, and Maria Watton. As we said in September, we had our work cut out for us, attempting a Physiotherapy victory for the third year in a row. Thankfully we had a great duo of script writers/directors in Sarah Casey and Terri-Lynn Boudreau.  Our Magic School Bus themed skit was filled with inter-professional collaboration, education interwoven with witty puns targeted towards other health care professions and ended with a high flying dance routine that left the audience in awe. We took home top fundraising honours, as well as most participation, (nearly all students in the MScPT program participated) as well as the three-peat victory! It was a fantastic evening with great representation from all Faculties of Health Professions and more importantly, over $54,000 was raised for RRSS!

As a final send off for the term, both classes got together for the much anticipated ‘Ugly Christmas Sweater Potluck’ before enduring exams and taking off for a well deserved holiday break. It’s a tough act to follow all the excitement that was the fall semester of 2014 but we’ll try our best. This week, second year students have returned ‘home’ to the Forrest Building for one final semester of class. Thankfully we’ve got lots of upcoming events and fundraisers to keep us occupied, notably the ‘PT Ball’ which will be held March 14th at the Westin Hotel.

Wish us luck!
