The fall term was busy for Physiotherapy students, as first year students settled into their classes and second year students prepared to start their final year. Aside from studying, much of the students’ energy and efforts have gone towards the annual For The Health Of It competition. Fundraising events included bake sales, six students shaving their heads and a popular Pie-the-Prof event with participation from students, faculty and staff. Such events helped the School of Physiotherapy raise over $13,000 and win the “Top Fundraising”, “Most Creative”, and “Most Participation” awards, and bring home the overall 2013 FTHOI championship trophy.
This fall students excelled on the intramural front by winning the floor hockey, women’s outdoor soccer, and co-ed outdoor soccer leagues. To kick off the winter term, physiotherapy took home the gold in a co-ed volleyball tournament.
Physiotherapy students are keen on getting involved in community events. In September, students participated in The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure to raise funds for breast cancer research, education and awareness programs. Students also volunteered as warm-up leaders in the Jingle Bell Walk/Run to help raise awareness for arthritis.
As November came along, the moustaches grew in. The PT boys did not miss a chance to raise MO awareness for men’s health through their many Movember fundraising ideas. One hit in particular was their 2014 Movember Calendar, which included both educational and comedic pictures of the PT boys practicing physiotherapy with one another.
We ended the semester by getting together for a festive Christmas Potluck, where both staff and students came together for great food, a Secret Santa gift exchange, and overall good fun!
Council is already keeping busy with many events planned for next semester, including the PT Ball, the Practice What You Preach Run and the Wildcat Cup Competition. More about these to come in the next issue.
