Fall 2023 Student News
Shown here are Year 1 students taking part in an introduction to the ICU and mechanical lifts lab in the C3LR of the Collaborative Health Education Building. In the ICU station, students were led through various patient scenarios using automated mannequins in a simulated ICU setting. For the mechanical lifts station, students acted as the patients and worked together practicing different mechanical lift transfer techniques. Thank you to PT clinical community lab demonstrators /instructors for participating in this vital student learning.

The fall semester started with a bang as the 2nd year cohort orientated the 1st year cohort to the School of PT. The students attended events organized by the PT Student Society such as campus tours, pizza at sunset, buddy mixer at Garrison Brewery, and axe throwing at HaliMac. Students had the chance to build friendships and make connections with those within and outside their cohort. It did not take long to see the bonds being formed between the 1st year students as they settled into PT school!

The 3rd year cohort is in their very last semester of PT school. They are currently finishing up their last clinical placements. Congratulations to the 3rd year cohort and all the best as you start your careers!
The 1st and 2nd year cohorts are on campus this semester. 1st years have a busy semester with six courses: Musculoskeletal (MSK) 1, Cardiorespiratory 1, Movement and Exercise Science, Scientific Injury (SI) I, Intro to PT, and Anatomy. They will be on campus again during the winter semester. The 2nd year cohort is back on campus after completing 12 weeks of clinical education over the summer semester. They are currently completing MSK 3, SI 2, Neurotherapeutics and Neuroanatomy. In the winter semester, they will be completing another six weeks of clinical education from January 8th to February 16th. Students recently got matched with their clinical location site. Both cohorts are also completing an Inter-Professional Health Education portfolio course.
Outside of academic work, students are raising money for the PT formal that will take place later in the winter semester. In the coming weeks, students will be participating in a private spin class hosted by SPINCO with extra funds going towards the PT formal. Hats off to the fundraising and planning committees, we appreciate the time and effort put into planning such a large event for students! A group of students from the 2nd year cohort are putting their cardiorespiratory and MSK skills to use as they volunteer their time at Heart for Life (a cardiac rehab program). Several students also volunteer at the Dal SPRING program and the Kids Physio group!
Thanks for reading! Come back next time for a new edition of PT Matters for updates on the PT students including an update on the 3rd year cohort from class representative Christine Barnes.
