Fall 2022 Student News

By Christine Barnes, Student Society President

A new school year is in full swing. In late August, the Class of 2024 was welcomed into the School through various orientation activities, including an Amazing Race around Halifax, axe throwing and a pizza and paint night on Citadel Hill, to name a few. These events were followed in early September by the elections of the new class into an important assortment of first-year representative positions, both for functions within the school and those involved in the larger Halifax- and PT-community. These representatives were introduced to their roles by the 2nd year students within that same position and have been working collaboratively in ensuring communication between the class and the respective organization.

The Class of 2023 is involved in their Neuro unit currently, concurrently learning both Neuroanatomy/Neurophysiology, and Neuro Practice for PT. They have also begun their involvement in their Scientific Inquiry course, where their groups are working in collaboration with a faculty mentor in the development and knowledge synthesis for their final research projects. The Class of 2024 has started their first semester, taking initial courses in Cardiorespiratory practice, MSK practice, Movement and Exercise Science, and Scientific Inquiry. These courses are working to build a foundational knowledge in each area of study for future learning and application.

Prior to reading week, members within each school within the Faculty of Health were involved in organizing a 3- or 5-km run/walk called “For the Health of It” to allow students within each program to practice what we preach and to move our bodies, with proceeds being donated to a charity chosen by the program with the most student representation at the run. The School of Physiotherapy had an 8-person turn out, and although a low number, made sure to represent PT creatively by dressing up in Halloween costumes. The group looks forward to a larger turnout next year to further represent the School of Physiotherapy.

Both class cohorts have passed the midterm mark and have just returned from reading week. As the students begin to prepare for final exams prior to the Christmas break, a few key events were organized to offer a reprieve from schoolwork - including a trip to a  recent Mooseheads game and a bake-sale fundraiser. Following Christmas, the Class of 2024 will return to begin a new semester, while the Class of 2023 will take place in their 2nd clinical placement for 6 weeks. The Class of 2023 will then return in mid-February to begin another semester.

Stay tuned for the next edition of PT Matters for further PT student updates!
