Fall 2019 Student News
Written by Student President, Holly Nason
The new school year is well under way and the Dalhousie Physiotherapy Student Society (DPTSS) hit the ground running with orientation and awesome events for the incoming students. This year's DPTSS includes Holly Nason (President), Megan McPhee (Vice President), Angela Pope (Treasurer), and Emily Blight (Secretary). These events helped the students become familiar with the campus, its resources, as well as their class and the second-year class.
In addition to the meet-and-greet event, there was a PT sports day, boat cruise, a buddy dinner and a camping trip complete with washer toss tournament and fun for all! Priding ourselves in collaborative interprofessional endeavors at Dalhousie, we have plans for joint activities with OT students later this semester. We hope that these events were enjoyed by the incoming class and that they felt welcomed by not only our class, but the School of Physiotherapy and the Faculty of Health.
This orientation could not have happened without some help from local businesses! We would like to thank Freeman’s Little New York, The Pint, The Lower Deck, Discover Halifax, Your Father’s Moustache, Freshii, Coburg Coffee, Glitterbean Café, The Wooden Monkey, The Daily Grind, Boston Pizza, Whispering Winds Campground, Murphy’s on the Water, and lastly The T-Room. We would also like to thank the NSPA, NBPA, NLPA, and PEIPA for sponsoring the annual “Welcome Back Pizza Party.”
The returning Class of 2020 has also gotten off to a great start catching up with professors, staff, and each other’s stories from the summer and clinical placements. With one year down, they now have some experience working in the profession and are truly excited to complete their final year of studies and become “real” physiotherapists!
We are presently planning and fundraising for “For the Health of It”. We are the reigning champions, which means there is much to be done! The Class of 2020 have done well getting the incoming students excited and involved in this production! Some of the fundraising events include a washer toss tournament, Pets of Physio calendar, bake sales, social nights, and so much more! The student body is thrilled for the upcoming year so stay tuned for updates!
