Dr. Derek Rutherford, Interim Director,
School of Physiotherapy

"As a profession, maximizing our momentum to ensure a future of sustainability and effectiveness in building a physically healthy Canadian population is vital for the long-term health of our nation."

Change can be a catalyst to build momentum. Momentum, by definition, is the product of mass and velocity; but of what value is velocity if the path is not directed?

Consider the statement made by School of Physiotherapy alumna and Registrar of our Nova Scotia College of Physiotherapists, Joan Ross, “Embrace change and run with it…better still, be part of it and help direct the path it takes”.  We need to step up and be the answer to the healthcare crisis and show our value as primary care professionals. Heath care is changing at a rapid rate, that much is obvious. As a profession, maximizing our momentum to ensure a future of sustainability and effectiveness in building a physically healthy Canadian population is vital for the long-term health of our nation.

The School of Physiotherapy has embraced this challenge; working to increase our momentum for the advancement of Physiotherapy in Atlantic Canada. This newsletter highlights many of these initiatives.  We are seeing our faculty taking on leadership roles in the Faculty and University, productivity in research, and advocating for diversity and equity to ensure an inclusive learning environment for our students. Perhaps the element with the greatest mass, culminating over 4 years of work by external and internal stake holders is the revitalization of our curriculum master plan, the details of which can be found within this newsletter.

I would like to personally thank all of the contributors to our programming in the School of Physiotherapy. I would like to think that together, we can build sufficient momentum to ensure a future of sustainability in physiotherapy practice and significantly contribute to the success of Health Care in Canada.
