Summer 2019 Director's Message

Interim Director for the School of Physiotherapy,  Dr. Derek Rutherford

"It is wonderful to see the School of Physiotherapy grow not only in Physiotherapy academics but also in research capacity."

The end of summer is approaching. The time of year for growth and the enjoyment of friends, colleagues, family. For faculty in the School of Physiotherapy, it is also a time for new beginnings and for happy endings. As you read through this summer edition of Physiotherapy Matters, you will see evidence of these beginnings and endings. We have profiled Dr. Anne Fenety, past director and faculty member in the School of Physiotherapy; a happy ending to many years of service to Dalhousie University. We also bid farewell to Ms. Lauren Singh, who over the past year, took on a significant role developing and delivering our cardiorespiratory curriculum. Ms. Joanne Tortola, our Administrative Manager, whom many of you may have come to know, has taken a position in Faculty of Law. And finally, as my time as Interim Director of the School of Physiotherapy comes to a close, I would like to extend a thank you for your support over the past year to our students, our programming, and to your School.

Now to new beginnings. Over the course of the summer we will begin to see many new faces in the School of Physiotherapy. These include a Tier II Canada Research Chair in physical activity, mobility and healthy aging, a Probationary Tenure Track Faculty member, a new Instructor and a new School Director. These details will follow in the Fall PT Matters Newsletter. At this time I would like to welcome Ms. Jascinth Butterfield our new Administrative Manager to the School of Physiotherapy Team. Of course a paragraph on new beginnings would not be complete without welcoming our new students to the MSc PT programming. We are very excited to have new and returning students arrive in September, ready to engage and learn in a profession we are all so very passionate about. I would also like to extend a welcome to our largest cohort of new and returning MSc Rehabilitations Research students. It is wonderful to see the School of Physiotherapy grow not only in Physiotherapy academics but also in research capacity.

In concluding, I would like to extend a big thank you to the alumni and supporters of our School of Physiotherapy Mission; To educate physiotherapists and scholars who excel; inspire through research and discovery that advances knowledge and practice; and improve the health and wellness of the diverse communities we serve, through collaboration and innovation.

Have a safe and happy summer and stay tuned for the Fall PT Matters Newsletter - it is promised to be a memorable one.
