Clinical Placements Summer 2024
Clinical Instructors - What Student's are Saying
When it comes to mentoring, some clinical instructors go above and beyond to provide a rich environment for clinical practice experience and endless opportunities for learning while playing an active role in the exchange of ideas and experiences. Here you will read about a couple out of the many outstanding clinical instructors who provide a rich learning environment for our MScPT students.
Kiera has given me the opportunity to learn at my own pace and has supported me with everything I have accomplished on my placement, I hope I can become even half the physiotherapist she is! ~ 1st year MScPT student, Kate Delehanty
As a clinical instructor but more so as a mentor, Kiera Duffie has demonstrated what it means to love what you do and do what you love. Her approach to physiotherapy as a profession and lifestyle is infectious and has a lasting impact on her patients and everyone around her. I have heard many describe her as the “light of the hospital” and feel this description is spot on. The biopsychosocial model of care for patients is at the forefront of her mind, leading her compassion to be felt in every interaction she has. The environment she has created for students, fellow physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals is one of comfort and welcome. Enjoying your time at the hospital when you are part of Kiera’s team is not hard. She bent over backwards to ensure that I was content with my progress and always checked in with how I was feeling, sparking discussions about a particular patient’s health condition, what I thought would be beneficial in their rehab, and their next steps. I learned a plethora of skills from Kiera, such as how to lead with kindness and compassion, ensure I set myself up for success during a patient session, interact with patients professionally, and grow my confidence as a PT student.
Truly Amazing, One of the Best ~
1st year MScPT student, Lara Swart shares her impressions of Clinical Instructor, Sue Quann.
Sue Quann is a pioneer in the healthcare profession at the Miramichi Regional Hospital. Throughout her 35-year career at the hospital as a physiotherapist, Sue has built a solid rapport with patients, students, and fellow healthcare workers (in the hospital and community). Every day during my placement, at least one person told me how fortunate I am to learn under the supervision of Sue, whether they were hospital staff, patients, or family of patients. The following words were used to describe her: “Truly amazing,” “One of the best,” and “So knowledgeable,” to name a few. I can attest to these words being true after my placement since I witnessed how Sue advocates for patients, respects the wide diversity of the patient population, and creates a safe space for patients to communicate. She provides each patient with her undivided attention and makes each patient and their family feel heard, whether they want to talk for 5 minutes or 1 hour.
Furthermore, Sue’s dedication to student education is evident as she creates a welcoming environment by allowing students to learn in a non-judgmental atmosphere where questions are welcomed, mistakes are considered learning opportunities, and students are motivated to succeed. She created many learning experiences by allowing me to work with the neurophysios, observe the respiratory therapists, do cough assist, and watch surgeries. Sue is further committed to the utmost standards of professionalism, patient care, and interprofessional work.
