Upholding excellence in physiotherapy education
Every six years, physiotherapy programs across the country undergo a comprehensive accreditation review through Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada (PEAC). Accreditation ensures that programs meet or exceed national standards of quality, remain aligned with the evolving needs of healthcare, and continue to enhance student learning and professional readiness.
As one of only 15 fully accredited physiotherapy programs in Canada, Dalhousie’s School of Physiotherapy is committed to maintaining the highest standards of education and practice. For students, PEAC accreditation is essential: graduates of accredited entry-to-practice programs are eligible to become licensed physiotherapists in Canada after successfully completing the national competency exam.
Where we are in the process
Nearing the end of last year, the School notified PEAC of its intent to begin the accreditation review. Over the months that followed, the Director, along with faculty and staff completed an in-depth self-study report, examining every aspect of our program through the lens of PEAC’s accreditation standards.
From November 17–19 of this year, the School hosted a Peer Review Team (PRT), who conducted a thorough preliminary review of the self-study and then spent three days on site meeting with faculty, students, alumni, employers, clinicians, and administrators. Their goal: to verify our report, gather additional insights, and deepen their understanding of the MSc – Physiotherapy program.
As the visit wrapped up, Director Dr. Derek Rutherford shared how energizing the conversations were—"honest discussions about our strengths, our challenges, and our shared vision for advancing physiotherapy education in Atlantic Canada.” The PRT expressed appreciation for the School’s hospitality, preparation, and openness throughout the process.
What comes next
The remaining steps in the accreditation process include:
- PRT Final Report: The Peer Review Team submits its full assessment to PEAC.
- Program Response: The School reviews the PRT report and responds with any clarifications.
- Accreditation Decision: PEAC’s Accreditation Committee evaluates all documentation and will issue a final decision in June, 2026.
A warm thank you
Dr. Rutherford extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the self-study, welcomed the Peer Review Team, and shared their experiences during interviews and meetings. “Your time, insight, and enthusiasm made this process truly meaningful. It’s been a positive experience,” he shared, “and we look forward to a strong and exciting future for the MScPT program.”
