From Resource Gaps to Product Innovation: Rethinking Collaborative Innovation in Early‑Stage Software Startups
Uchechukwu Nwogu
Abstract
Early-stage software startups often operate with limited resources, uncertain markets, and pressure to innovate quickly. This talk draws on my PhD research to examine how startups use collaboration with customers, mentors, incubators, accelerators, universities, investors, and technical partners to support product innovation. I will briefly share insights of the findings from an empirical study with software startup actors, and a proposed prescriptive framework designed to help startups assess readiness, select suitable ecosystem partners, integrate external knowledge, and measure product innovation outcomes. The session will highlight practical lessons for founders, support organizations, and digital transformation stakeholders interested in turning ecosystem engagement into meaningful product innovation.
