The Shaar Shalom Lecture at Dalhousie University - featuring Cindy Blackstock
Please join us this Thursday, March 3 at 7pm AST as we welcome Dr. Cindy Blackstock to deliver this year's Shaar Shalom Lecture at Dalhousie. Her talk is titled: “Spirit Bear: Echoes of the Past”. The presentation will discuss engaging people in learning about the diverse history of First Nations to prepare them to implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s calls to action and create an equitable future for all children. Following Dr. Blackstock's presentation, she will sit down for a discussion with lawyer, writer and instructor of Native Studies, Patricia Doyle-Bedwell and will answer questions from the audience. The event will be presented in the McInnes Room of the Student Union Building and also via livestream. Registration is required.
Video recording: Senior year FASS students provide advice for deciding on study areas
Last month, as part of the Bissett Student Success Centre’s Academic Exploration Series, FASS hosted a panel event that featured several senior year students who provided some wonderful insights and details about their experiences in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences so far and advice for students deciding on their majors/minors/honours programs/etc. In case you missed it, you can now watch the recording of the event online (Dal netID and password are required to access the video).
Leon and Rose Zitner Prize
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is thrilled to announce the launch of the Leon and Rose Zitner Prize. In collaboration with the Healthy Populations Institute and the Faculties of Health, Medicine and Dentistry, this $5000 prize will be awarded to a Dalhousie student for outstanding contributions to citizen knowledge and community engagement in the area of health and wellbeing. Please view the attached poster for full details. Submissions are due by April 15, 2022.
The Clan Ramsey of Nova Scotia Prize
The purpose of this competition is to provide an annual prize to the Dalhousie University student registered with the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences who has written the best paper dealing with (any aspect of) the influence of Scottish culture within Canada (first preference will be given to papers dealing with the influence of Scottish culture within Nova Scotia). This award was established by the Clan Ramsay in Nova Scotia in recognition of the contribution of George Ramsay, 19th earl of Dalhousie, founder of Dalhousie University.
Prize for this year (2022): $750.00 Deadline: Monday, April 25, 2022
Students who wish to submit an essay as an entry to this competition are to send their essays, along with a brief note of nomination from their professor indicating which course this essay was written for and whether or not the professor approves the submission of this essay to the contest OR the professor can submit the essay and note of nomination/approval on the student's behalf.

Classics Department
Res Publica is proud to announce the Pythian Games 2022, to be held on March 11th at 5:30pm in the Scotiabank Auditorium, Marion McCain Arts and Social Sciences Building.
The Pythian Games is an annual festival and competition of recitation and performance in honour of Apollo, which includes poetry, theatre, song and musical performance in the ancient languages studied in the Classics Department as well as various modern languages.
This year, Res Publica is offering the option of sending in prerecorded submissions as well as live shows. We encourage people who are not able to attend the Games in person to make remote submissions! Please contact us regarding either at respublicadal@gmail.com.

Jean Monnet European Union Centre of Excellence
Summer Institute on Migration and Identity in Europe and Canada
June 27-July 8 2022
The Jean Monnet European Union Centre of Excellence is pleased to announce the 2022 Summer Institute on Migration and Identity in Europe and Canada. This intensive, for-credit (POLI3820) and in-person course brings together Canadian and international students to explore and compare Canadian and European experiences of migration and identity through a combination of seminars, guest lectures, hands-on research projects and field trips in Halifax and beyond. Classroom sessions take place at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, which provides an unparalleled learning experience through its exhibits, displays, oral history clips and artifacts.
Topics covered include:
Immigration policy: comparing Canada and Europe
Multiculturalism: Canadian and European perspectives
Identity politics in Europe and Canada
Exploring Nova Scotia local communities
Speakers include academics and museum staff from a range of disciplines and backgrounds, with the lead instructors being: Ruben Zaiotti (Political Science), Jerry Bannister (History) and Kiran Banerjee (Political Science).
