Dal AC ECOlympics

Posted by Stephanie Rogers on January 16, 2015 in News

This year Dalhousie AC will be holding the second annual ECOlympics.

The ECOlympics is a two week long event which promotes sustainability in residences on campus. Meters have been installed on each house at the AC so that energy usage can be tracked more precisely. These meters are being used during the ECOlympics to track usage before and after commitments are made to reduce energy use and the house with the largest reduction in usage will win the trophy and a prize.

Last year, Trueman House won the trophy. This year competition will be fierce as knowledge of and participation in the ECOlympics grows. Come out to events to win prizes, and reduce your energy usage to win the ECOlympics trophy and bring the bragging rights home for your house! Events include:

January 09-23, 2015 – Baseline weeks

o   Electricity usage is tracked for each residence as a starting point. The reductions from January 23rd until February 06th are measured against this baseline, and at the end of the ECOlympics the house with the greatest reduction wins the trophy, a prize and bragging rights!

Friday, January 23, 2015 – ECOlympics kick-off

o    “Trees” will be placed in each residence lobby. Students can write down personal commitments to reduce energy usage on leaves and points will be awarded for participation.

Saturday, January 24, 2015 – Movie Screening

o   “Who Killed the Electric Car” will be shown in the Riverview Room at 12 pm

Date TBA – BYOMug Hot Chocolate

o   Hot chocolate will be served in the Horseshoe for those who bring a reusable mug.

Thursday, January 29, 2015 – Sustainability Jeopardy in Riverview Room at 6 pm

o   A chance to win a prize and test your knowledge of sustainability on and off campus

Sunday, February 01, 2015 – Photo Scavenger Hunt

o   Teams from each residence will compete in an interactive hunt around campus

Friday, February 06, 2015 – National Sweater Day & Announcement of winning House

o   Instead of turning up the heat, put on a sweater. House members are encouraged to participate by wearing ugly sweaters.

o   The winning House will be announced at dinnertime in Jenkins hall.

There will be many opportunities for residents to participate and gain points for their houses. Will Trueman House be victorious again? Will Chapman or Fraser students pull ahead and win for their team? Your participation will determine the outcome. Come on out and win that trophy!!
