Mawkwil~mn~j – “Let’s Look for it Together”

Posted by Jaq-Lin Larder on April 8, 2024 in Research Funding

Mawkwil~mn~j – “Let’s Look for it Together” – is an Indigenous community research partnership seed fund that aims to provide financial support to Indigenous communities and Dalhousie researchers seeking to build and grow relationships with each other.

Applications for this seed fund can be initiated by Indigenous Nations, organizations, and communities within the Atlantic region or across other parts of Canada, or by Dalhousie researchers who are able to demonstrate intention to address research priorities as identified by an Indigenous Nation, organization or community.

This seed fund encourages meaningful engagement, co-learning, and sharing, and is meant to honour cultural protocols and respectful processes for partnership development. This fund offers a unique opportunity for Indigenous communities and organizations to leverage the research talent, expertise, and resources at Dalhousie University, and enables communities and researchers to become better acquainted with potentially aligned interests and research priorities. The seed fund permits partnership development activities and connections to occur in preparation of subsequent grant cycles.

Up to $36,000 is available for the current competition, including $6000 to support projects related to ocean research funded through the Ocean Frontier Institute / Canada First Research Excellence Fund (OFI/CFREF).

Each applicant may request up to $3,000. Projects supported through OFI/CFREF may be used over a maximum period of 12 months. All other projects may use the funds over a period of two (2) years. It is anticipated that up to twelve (12) applications will be selected for funding, including up to ten (10) applications in any discipline and up to two (2) applications related to ocean research.

Priority will be given to new projects and/or collaborations not previously supported by Mawkwil~mn~j.

Indigenous Nations, organizations or communities interested in partnering with Dalhousie researchers may submit the completed application form to Indigenousresearch@dal.ca.

Dalhousie researchers seeking to develop new or enhance existing relationships with Indigenous Nations, organizations, or communities in support of shared research interests and priorities should submit via ROMEO the following:

  1. Completed application form
  2. Confirmation of community interest

The deadline to submit applications is May 30, 2024.

Please note that we anticipate a second call for the seed fund to be launched in Spring 2024, in case longer timelines are needed to engage and confirm community interest.
