Fisheries and Oceans Canada: Launch of Coastal Restoration Fund

Posted by Suman Jha on June 5, 2017 in Research Funding

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is pleased to announce the launch of the Coastal Restoration Fund (CRF) and its first call for expressions of interest (EoI) from May 31 to July 12 2017.

The CRF is a $75 million contribution program established under the Ocean Protection Plan to support coordinated and strategic coastal aquatic habitat restoration projects that contribute to the mitigation of stressors affecting marine life and their habitats. The CRF will provide $15M/year for the next 5 years to Indigenous groups, community-based organizations, conservation groups, and academic researchers/institutions to undertake projects along Canada’s coasts that:

  • Contribute to strategic planning and studies in key coastal areas;
  • Rehabilitate aquatic habitats that contribute to the mitigation of stressors affecting marine life and their habitats;
  • Contribute to the long-term sustainability of aquatic coastal habitats through monitoring and maintenance; and
  • Encourage and build local community capacity to maintain and restore aquatic habitats.

As an eligible recipient, you may be interested in applying to the program. It should be noted that the CRF will accept one-year (2017-18) to five-year (2017-22) project applications. Preference will be given to projects ranging from $200,000 to $1 million per year that include Indigenous partners, engage a broad number of partners, and address federal or regional coastal restoration priorities.  Lower project requests, as low as $50,000 may be considered if they’re of strategic value.

The maximum level of total Canadian government assistance (federal, provincial, territorial and municipal) for the same eligible expenditures for this Program will not exceed 100% of the total eligible expenditures of the activity (i.e., 100% stacking limit).

Further information on the program can be found on the CRF website here. The website provides more information concerning eligibility and requirements, as well as the Guidelines and EoI Form. Further information on the program will be available through a webinar that will be held in the near future. If you are interested in participating please contact your regional DFO office at the email address below.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is committed to help keeping Canadians waters and coasts safe and clean, for today's use and for future generations. We invite you to apply to CRF so that you can contribute to a clean and healthy environment and sustainable aquatic ecosystems for Canadian’s coasts.

Please do not hesitate to contact Tony Henderson at DFO.CRF-FRC.MAR.MPO@DFO-MPO-GC.CA or by telephone 902-401-0602 for more information on the CRF (or should you require guidance on your EoI).
