NSERC 2020: The Future Starts Now

Posted by Suman Jha on December 14, 2015 in Announcements

Hello everyone,

I’m extremely pleased to announce the release of our new strategic plan, NSERC 2020. Thank you to the many members of the community who provided input on this plan during consultations. Your input has helped us articulate a clear mission for NSERC: to be the focal point for discovery and innovation in the natural sciences and engineering in Canada.

To deliver on this mission, I want to stress that we will continue to invest in, and build on a foundation of discovery. Without this foundation and the brain trust that continually nourishes it, we would have nothing.

We will also focus on innovation and its dynamic interaction with discovery research. We have an important role to play in connecting discovery researchers with industry and other knowledge users. We do this through partnerships, targeted investments and by being a convener of the different players involved in the research and innovation ecosystem in Canada.

NSERC 2020 outlines five clear goals. These goals address factors critical to the success of discovery and innovation in Canada:

  • Helping the next generation of researchers launch their independent careers.
  • Building a science culture to improve awareness and understanding of science and engineering.
  • Increasing the diversity (populations, institutions, regions, sectors) and competitiveness of the research base.
  • Strengthening the dynamic between discovery and innovation.
  • Going global to increase Canadian participation in and access to international research.

I invite you to learn more about NSERC’s new strategic plan. With discovery and innovation, we will take full advantage of our knowledge-based capital for the economic and social benefit of Canadians.

Thank you.
