Drop-in supports
The International Centre (IC) offers various supports and services for all international students, including:
Drop-in immigration advising (in person)
Monday – Friday, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. (Atlantic Time)
The IC offers drop-in immigration advising on a first-come, first-served basis. Drop-in sessions are no longer than 30 minutes. If you need to book advising for longer than 30 minutes, you can book an appointment with an Immigration Advisor. Drop-in sessions are also available on the Sexton Campus (Melda Murray Student Centre) on Wednesdays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Drop-in academic advising (in person)
Thursdays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. (Atlantic Time)
A Student Success Advisor from the Bissett Student Success Centre will have a drop-in session at the IC every week. This advisor supports undergraduate students in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Faculty of Science, and first-year Engineering students.
Writing Centre sessions (in person and virtual)
Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (Atlantic Time)
Our International Student Writing Advisor will be at the IC for virtual and in-person writing appointments. You can book an appointment here.
Ombudsperson (in person)
Tuesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (Atlantic Time)
The Ombudsperson Office is available to all Dalhousie students for free, confidential, impartial, and independent support to help resolve any university-related concerns. Some examples include:
- Providing general resource information and making appropriate referrals
- Identifying and explaining relevant university processes/policies
- Working with students to explore and strategize options for problem-solving
- Listening and providing an objective perspective
New student orientation 2.0
Are you a new student who missed the Winter Welcome Day on January 5? The International Centre will host a virtual orientation make-up session so you can still get the most important information. Learn about the university's supports/resources, and connect with your fellow students. The event will take place on January 16 at 1:00 p.m., and will be immediately followed by a virtual Immigration Info Session at 2:00 p.m.
Monday Night Meal
Monday Night Meal is a free food program offered to current Dal students by Multifaith Services and the International Centre. Through the winter semester, meals will be served every Monday (with the first event on January 12). Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and food will be served while supplies last. Join us for a delicious meal and a sense of community on campus! Check our Instagram account (@Dalinternational) closer to the day to know more about the menu and the campus partner hosting the meal. There will be a virtual Immigration Info Session at 2:00 p.m. on January 16. All students are invited to attend.
Workshops for job seekers
The International Centre will be hosting three virtual workshops to support you get started on your job hunt journey for winter.
Working in Halifax (with Erika)
January 13 from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.
Get your job hunt started with the basics, including what you need to apply for a job, what employers are looking for, and ways to build your Canadian job experience. We will also cover resources you can access on campus to best support your career journey. Join the session here.
Work Smartly with AI (with Puru)
January 14 from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.
Learn how to use AI wisely in your job search. We’ll highlight common pitfalls to avoid and show you practical ways to make AI work to your advantage when you are creating your resume, writing your cover letter, and preparing for an interview. Join the session here.
Networking Tips and Tricks (with Tajrian)
January 15 from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.
Want to grow your professional network but don’t know where to start? This session will give you practical strategies to build connections in any setting, whether it's a career fair, networking event, or a casual conversation. Join the session here.
SIN Clinic and Tax Info Session
You can learn more about receiving GST/HST credits and tuition credits by dropping by the International Centre for a tax info session on January 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We will also have a representative from Services Canada on hand to issue Social Insurance Numbers and answer questions. Get to know how to protect your sensitive information to avoid scams and keep more money in your pocket.
