Required documents for studying in Canada

In addition to a study permit, you may also need a provincial attestation letter (PAL) and/or an entry visa (including a temporary resident visa and/or electronic travel authorization).

Students who have been accepted directly into a program with a mandatory work-integrated learning component will also require a co-op work permit.

Study permit

A study permit is a document issued by the Canadian Government that allows international students to study in Canada for a limited time. If your program of study in Canada is longer than six months, you require a study permit.

To extend your stay in Canada as a student, you must renew your study permit at least 5–6 months before it expires.

Provincial attestation letter

A provincial attestation letter (PAL) is a letter provided by the province or territory where you plan to study. It confirms that you’ve been assigned one of the available spaces to study in that province or territory. In most cases, you will need a PAL to apply for a study permit.

Temporary resident visa

A temporary resident visa (TRV) allows you to enter (and re-enter) Canada. It is issued by a Canadian Visa Office and placed in your passport. It confirms that you have met the requirements for admission to Canada as a temporary resident.

Electronic travel authorization

Travellers who do not require a temporary resident visa (TRV) to enter Canada may require an electronic travel authorization (eTA) instead. This type of visa is electronically linked to your passport.

Co-op/internship work permit

If you are enrolled in a program with a mandatory work-integrated learning component (e.g. co-op, internship, or practicum) you will need a co-op work permit.
