Walter H. Fiander
Walter H. Fiander was born on April 21, 1939 in Codroy, Newfoundland. He attended Holy Trinity School and then the Nova Scotia Agricultural College from 1956 to1958. He completed his BSc (Agr) in Horticulture at Macdonald College in 1960.
Returning home after graduation he began his working career as an Agricultural Representative with the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Agriculture in 1960. From 1962 to 1964 he was Provincial Horticulturist and Bogland Development Officer with the Department of Agriculture.
Walter left provincial government in 1965 to become the Provincial Representative for C.I.L, Agricultural Division in Newfoundland and Labrador, a position he still maintains. He was owner/operator of Avalon Farm Supplies between 1975 and 1985. In 1985 he took on the role of Agricultural Representative for East Chem. Inc of Mount Pearl and remains active with that company.
Walter is a kind and generous person who holds a strong and genuine belief in the potential of agriculture in Newfoundland and Labrador. His main role since graduating from university in 1960 has been to provide advice and information to farmers of Newfoundland/Labrador on growing techniques for all crops, a task for which he has extensive knowledge and experience. He is widely known and respected by the farmers and the agricultural sector, both within Newfoundland and Labrador and in Canada. He maintains professionalism in all aspects of his work and goes to great lengths to assist the farmers of the province.
Walter has given extensive support and done a great deal of work with all the producers and agricultural organizations such as the Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Newfoundland and Labrador Horticulture Producers’ Council, the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture and Landscape Newfoundland and Labrador. He attends several agricultural meetings and gatherings and plays an active role in discussions with farmers on a daily basis.
Walter is a person who provides sound advice and helps to solve many problems and issues for farmers. He remains updated on current issues and developments in the agricultural industry through attendance at training courses and seminars.
Walter attends and supports all agricultural exhibitions throughout the Province. He continues to support the Nova Scotia Agricultural College and Macdonald College through personal and financial donations.
Walter and his wife Gay have three grown children, Shirley, Elizabeth and Lorne and live in St. John’s.
Nominated by the Newfoundland and Labrador Horticulture Producers Council for his lifelong support of the provinces agricultural industry, Walter H. Fiander is a very deserving inductee into the Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame.
