Primary Health Care Research Day 2016

The third annual Primary Health Care Research Day was held on June 9, 2016.  This year’s event had 70 participants comprised of learners, decision-makers, and researchers from a variety of disciplines.  The poster session featured over 20 posters highlighting primary health care research from across the province.  For the first time, short oral presentations were presented in concurrent sessions.

The day began with a presentation from Ms. Shannon Ryan Carson, Director of Primary Health Care, Family Practice and Tri-Facilities with the Nova Scotia Health Authority.  This presentation set the stage for the day by providing an overview of what is happing in primary health care at NSHA.  Visiting scholar Dr. Sabrina Wong (University of British Columbia School of Nursing) presented on performance measurement in primary health care, using the TRANSFORMATION project as a case study.  Visiting scholar Dr. Jean-Frederic Levesque presented on using data to inform decision making, providing an international context through his work with the Bureau of Health Information in Australia.

Research Day was capped off by a panel discussion about how performance measurement can affect primary health care delivery in Nova Scotia.  The panel was moderated by Dr. Emily Gard Marshall from the Dalhousie University Department of Family Medicine.  The panelists were Dr. Rick Gibson, Chief of Family Practice, Central Zone and Ms. Kathy Bell, Director or Primary Health Care, Eastern Zone (both from NSHA) and Drs. Wong and Levesque.  The panel provided fruitful conversation about the role of performance measurement in primary healthcare delivery and had active audience participation.

The organizers would like to thank everyone who attended and helped to make the day such a success.  Special thanks to the Dalhousie University Office of the Vice President Research, which funds CoR-PHC through the Strategic Research Initiatives Fund.
