Curriculum Update
By Drs Niki Kiepek and Brenda Beagan
We are your regional School and are committed to working together to make an already excellent program even better.
Following community consultations with regional stakeholders across Atlantic Canada, the School of Occupational Therapy enthusiastically approved a new curriculum, which is expected to be launched in September 2024!
Why make changes to an already strong program?
We are proud of our current curriculum and our graduates. We plan to keep all aspects of the program that already work well, such as a strong focus on social justice and a commitment to interprofessional collaboration. The new curriculum will do this and more.
We plan to:
- introduce an entirely new course Resisting Colonialism in OT
- establish research streams, where some students will engage in hands-on research
- offer courses in mental health, physical health, and neurotherapeutics in both years of the program
- focus on preparing graduates for leadership roles in increasingly complex settings
The new curriculum reflects the 2021 Competencies for Occupational Therapists in Canada.
We extend our appreciation to everyone who contributed to the consultation process. Your input has been invaluable.
What’s next?
We’re not done yet! In the years to follow, we will be designing new courses for our new curriculum. We will draw on the knowledge and expertise of practicing occupational therapists to shape the courses and inform educational priorities. We are your regional School and are committed to working together to make an already excellent program even better.
