A passion for people

MR-Head-shot

Meet Mike Rogez, Dalhousie's MScOT 2011 graduate, dedicated Occupational Therapist at the NS Rehab and Arthritis Centre, and recipient of this year's Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists Fieldwork Educator Award of Excellence.

At the Nova Scotia Rehabilitation and Arthritis Centre in Halifax, an experienced occupational therapist is making a meaningful difference in the lives of clients every day. Since joining Nova Scotia Health in 2011, Mike Rogez has built a career rooted in a passion for helping people regain function and independence, with a clinical focus on mobility, seating assessments, wheelchair provision, amputee care, and involvement in an interdisciplinary ALS clinic. His work, primarily within the MSK and Neuro Outpatient programs, blends technical expertise with human connection—something he finds especially rewarding.

Mike’s path into occupational therapy began with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Cape Breton University in 2007, followed by an Honours degree in Kinesiology from the University of Waterloo in 2009. While his academic background laid a strong foundation, he credits much of his ongoing development to day-to-day clinical experiences. For him, learning never stops. Whether it’s from patients, colleagues, or students, each interaction is seen as an opportunity to grow.

Of all the areas he works in, seating and amputee care stand out as particular passions. From assessments and equipment trials to fittings and wheelchair skills training, he takes pride in helping clients navigate life with greater ease and comfort. He describes his work as a blend of problem-solving and empathy, and that combination continues to drive his enthusiasm for the profession.

In addition to his clinical role, Mike also plays an active part in mentoring the next generation of occupational therapists by offering fieldwork placements to students. He believes these real-world experiences are invaluable for learners and benefit clinicians as well. Hosting students not only helps bridge the gap between classroom theory and clinical practice but also allows him to stay up-to-date with the latest developments in the field. He speaks highly of the students he’s mentored so far, describing them as keen and eager to learn.

When offering advice to students preparing for their placements, Mike emphasizes the importance of the “human element” in clinical work. While technical skills are essential, being empathetic, dependable, and able to build rapport is just as crucial. He encourages students to try to see the world through their clients’ eyes—to truly understand the daily challenges clients face, as this perspective is key to setting meaningful goals and planning effective interventions.

He also encourages other clinicians to consider taking on fieldwork students, highlighting the mutual benefits. Students bring fresh perspectives and energy to the workplace, and their presence can turn routine interactions into rich learning moments for everyone involved.

Looking ahead, Mike sees the profession moving increasingly toward community-based roles, where occupational therapists can meet clients in their own environments. This shift, he believes, represents an exciting and necessary evolution that aligns well with client-centered care.

Outside of work, Mike enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, and staying active through sports like golf, hockey, and baseball. Surprisingly, one of his favorite ways to unwind is by spending time in the garage cleaning his car—a quiet, satisfying ritual that offers a moment of calm amid a busy life.

Mike is this year's recipient of the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists Fieldwork Educator Award of Excellence. The purpose of the Fieldwork Educator Award of Excellence is to acknowledge the contribution of a practice educator who demonstrates exceptional performance in student practice teaching and in student mentoring in the workplace, and who represents a gold standard in inspiring students to passionately pursue professional practice.

Please join us in congratulating Mike on receiving this prestigious award —a well-deserved recognition of his dedication to mentorship, innovation, and outstanding client care.
