FASS GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Academic Assistance for FASS Students
Dear FASS students,
We’ve reached the end of an incredibly challenging academic term. Whether this is your first year at Dalhousie or your final term, you might be feeling more stress and anxiety than you’re used to. You are not alone. As a campus community, we’ve all felt the pressures, the disruptions, and the uncertainty this fall. Please remember that Dalhousie has many supports available to you. You can find most of these resources here: https://www.dal.ca/current_students.html.
As the term ends and the exam period begins, here is some advice that might help you to take on your final exams:
Calculate your course grades before the exam. Check your grades in Brightspace, or manually calculate the marks you’ve received, using the method of evaluation in your course syllabi. What is your course grade going into the exam? What grade are you hoping to earn on the exam? What courses do you need to prioritize in your study schedule?
Make a study schedule. Set aside time to study for each of your courses—but don’t forget to set aside time for yourself, too. Eat. Sleep. Relax. It’s important to take care of yourself, as well as your grades.
Celebrate your accomplishments. Whether you’ve met the academic goals you set for yourself at the beginning of the term or not, identify a few things that you’re proud of. Did you write a great paper? Learn about a new academic concept or discipline? Improve a skill? Make note of specific things that you’re proud of.
Ask for help. Reach out to a professor, a staff member, or an academic advisor if you need help. We are a community. There are people who can support you, or who can help you to identify and access the resources you need.
I wish you good luck on your exams, and a restful end-of-term break!
- Dr. Becca Babcock, Assistant Dean Student Matters

DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCEMENTS
Law, Justice & Society Program
The Dalhousie Undergraduate Law Society will be hosting its first annual Dalhousie Moot Cup in the Marion McCain Arts and Social Sciences building on Sunday, December 4th.
This mooting competition was established earlier this year by two Honours students in the Law, Justice & Society Program, Sophia King Gillis and Keiren McClelland, together with a student from the Law and Legal Studies Program at Carleton University, Kayla Robinson.
Four teams will compete in front of 2 panels of judges per round with between four to eight judges. Each team will be presenting arguments on behalf of both the appellants and respondents for the 2022 Canadian Supreme Court criminal case of R. v Stairs. The participating judges are experienced legal professionals as well as students and professors from the Schulich School of Law.
Itinerary:
A welcome address by the organizers
8:30am, Fireplace Lounge, McCain Building
A man stands on a ledge, about to leap from his apartment window. He is poised on the edge of a transformation, of a new way of seeing. But he is interrupted by his many neighbours, who are too preoccupied with their own problems to notice what he’s doing. Morris Panych’s highly theatrical play is a darkly funny and potent metaphor for being alive, for seeking to break free of limiting ideas, and for beginning again with fresh eyes.
The Fountain School of Performing Arts presents the Dalhousie Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Leonardo Perez. Audiences will be treated to a new orchestral commission by esteemed FSPA piano professor and composer Peter Allen, Mozart’s spirited and exhilarating overture to the Marriage of Figaro, and the intimate and beautiful Sinfionetta No.1 for Strings by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson. Lastly, audiences will be mesmerized by the depictions of nature and emotions in Beethoven’s "Pastoral” Sixth Symphony.
*Please note that the Jazz Concert for fall term originally scheduled for Dec 3 has been cancelled. We hope to reschedule in April 2023.

Young U.S. voters reduced the ‘Red Wave’ to a ‘Pink Splash’ in the midterm elections — why didn’t polls predict it?
The U.S. midterms revealed a generational shift away from youth voter apathy. The apathetic, in fact, seem to be those trying to accurately measure public opinion using outdated methods, says Dal PhD candidate Julia Rodgers.
