University Delegates (UD) Meeting Minutes – April 4, 2024

 

1. Clinical Trials Registration and Disclosure

The policy for Clinical Trials Registration and Disclosure was released in 2022.  CIHR continues to increase awareness and education among Nominated Principal Investigators for clinical trials.  CIHR continues to monitor compliance with the poligy and see that ~57% of funded clinical trials were registered.  CIHR contacted the central research services offices in the cases where registration of funded trials had not yet occurred. Following that outreach ~97% of CIHR-funded clinical trials are now registered.

2. Anti-racism and anti-ableism

Achieving a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive Canadian research enterprise is essential to creating the excellent, innovative, and impactful research necessary to advance knowledge and understanding, and to respond to local, national and global challenges.

With these goals in mind, the Tri-agencies are committed to:

  • Supporting equitable access to funding opportunities for all members of the
    research community
  • Promoting the integration of equity, diversity and inclusion-related considerations in
    research design and practices
  • Increasing equitable and inclusive participation in the research system, including on
    research teams
  • Collecting the data and conducting the analyses needed to include equity,
    diversity and inclusion considerations in decision-making

3. Project Grant Update Tri-Agency CV

CIHR is piloting the Tri-Agency CV with select funding opportunities including:

  • Training Grant:  Health Research Training Platform (2024/2025)
  • Catalyst Grant:  Chief Public Health Officer Report
  • Operating Grant: National Women’s Health Research Initiative: Innovation Fund

Tri-Agency CV Template Objectives:

- Inclusivity for diverse applicant types
- Enhance usability
- Reduction of administrative burden

The Tri-Agency CV is a narrative-style CV with a max of 5 pages and no section-specific volume limits. The six sections include personal information, personal statement, most significant contributions to knowledge, supervisory, activities, mentorship activities and other relevant information can be customized for the funding opportunity. CIHR continues to seek input and feedback as they develop and test use of the Tri-agency CV.

4. Project Grant Competition Update

Application numbers were increased in Fall 2023 competition compared to Spring 2023 competition. The current grant size is ~1.1M over 5 years.  There were no new trends in the number of applications from early career researchers relative to middle or senior career researchers in the Fall 2022 competition compared to early project grant competitions. The number of applications across pillars by gender remain constant.
