Celebrating with a classic: Dal alum pens modern twist on Frankenstein

Playwright Gillian Clark (BA (Theatre)’13) has created "Drums and Organs," a new theatrical creature inspired by Mary Shelley’s "Frankenstein” — a book that, like Dalhousie, turns 200 years old this year. Debuting as the final theatrical production of the Fountain School’s season, it’s the latest chapter in Clark’s emerging artistic journey, one marked by struggle, teamwork and inspiration.

For much of his storied 40-year career, Ford Doolittle (1941-present) has split his time between experimental work in evolutionary biology and what he calls “theoretical interventions.” He has frequently challenged traditional ideas about DNA and the human genome; today, his ideas are widely accepted as core tenets in how we understand and study the very building blocks of life. In 2013, he became the first researcher east of Quebec to receive perhaps Canada’s highest recognition for scientific research: the Herzberg Gold Medal.

GRAD STUDIES

Masters of Marine Management student Kristal Ambrose, whose research focuses on plastic waste in her home country of the Bahamas, took home first prize in Dalhousie's 3 Minute Thesis competition. The event, supersized for Dal’s 200th anniversary, featured some of the university's top grad students sharing their work in three-minute presentations.
