A mother's memory, a daughter's dedication: Maike van Niekerk becomes Dal's 90th Rhodes Scholar

Maike van Niekerk has accomplished a lot in her time as a Dal Nursing student: conducting research on cancer and Canada's Indigenous peoples; winning several major university and community awards; launching a cancer charity in memory of her mother. Now, she's off to study at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar.

RESEARCH

Researchers from Dal's Faculties of Science and Medicine took home awards in three of the four major categories at the 14th annual Discovery Awards, which celebrate science, technology and innovation in Nova Scotia. Dal Physics Professor Jeff Dahn was also inducted into the Nova Scotia Science Hall of Fame.

COMMUNITY

Dal's Gender and Women's Studies program, Human Rights and Equity Services, South House and others on campus are teaming up for 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The campaign starts on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (November 25) and runs through International Human Rights Day (December 10).

ARTS & CULTURE

The Honourable Mayann Francis, Distinguished Public Service Fellow in the School of Public Administration, discusses the art exhibition (currently on display) featuring the one-of-a-kind garments that marked her time as Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia.

- 'Tis the season! A 30-year tradition, the annual Dalplex Christmas Craft Market takes place November 25 to 27 in Halifax. BOGO admission for Dal/King's students all weekend, and faculty/staff get half-price admission from 12-5 p.m. on Friday. Full details.

- Want to show off your artistic side? The Dalhousie Art Gallery is accepting submissions for its annual Student, Staff, Faculty and Alumni Exhibition. Submissions are due Sunday, November 27. More info.
