The Dalhousie Black Faculty and Staff Caucus was formed by Dr. Afua Cooper after her arrival as the Johnston Chair in Black Canadian Studies in the summer of 2011.

The Caucus began with 22 Black Faculty and Staff members (both part time and full time). Initially, there was a discussion as to whether it would be called a caucus or collective, but the former term won out. Dr. Cooper chaired the Caucus from its inception to 2017.
