"“These kinds of intelligent systems … are the building blocks to a future regional transportation centre and a system that’s smarter, more responsive and more dynamic,” said Tilley.

Ahsan Habib, a transportation professor at Dalhousie University, said the move is “a good starting point” for using technology to improve the transportation system."

“This type of [innovative traffic solution] technology is quite effective, particularly for the busiest corridors,” he said in an interview."

"The Regional Transportation Plan (RTP), focuses on Halifax Regional Municipality, with expansions in East Hants, West Hants, Chester and portions of Lunenburg, Kings and Colchester. The report notes that 63 per cent of Nova Scotians live in HRM and it notes that congestion in the area will only increase due to population growth.

Transportation expert and professor at Dalhousie University, Ahsan Habib, said that if all companies across HRM were to implement return-to-office measures, auto trips in the city could increase as much as 43 per cent."

How long could it take to evacuate the Halifax peninsula? Nearly a day, says researcher. (CBC News)

March 31st, 2026

Exerpt from the article:

"Habib said the current estimate for a total evacuation is 23 hours. That’s an eight-hour increase since 2017. The estimate assumes that around 100,000 people occupy the peninsula on the average weekday.

“It’s not the population that’s the problem here, it’s the network itself," said Habib. "Since we are a historic town, we retrofitted most of our improvements in roadways. There are not enough areas without queue-building [for traffic]."

Habib said it’s good that Halifax Regional Municipality’s population is growing. But he said as HRM has added units, roads and neighbourhoods over the past decade, it has failed to properly account for the possibility of a mass evacuation into its plans."

Exerpt from the article:

“[Habib] said it’s important to “reinvigorate” transit to meet demand while keeping essential routes for rural communities. Improvements like dedicated bus lanes and increased transit access for underserved areas are needed for Halifax to retain its large student population, according to Habib. 'It’s important to embody the energy of the youth who want to live a fuller life, and an active public transportation system will offer this the best,' he said.”

CART Codes: HACK HOW WE MOVE | 24-Hour Student Hackathon

February 10, 2024

In the face of climate change, globalization, and inequity, transportation network and the communities they serve are becoming increasing vulnerable. Data collection and analysis are more important now than ever to establish benchmarks, quantify progress, and enact change. The complexity of these problems demands collective action to implement informed and proactive decisions and policies. Post-secondary students and recent graduates in computer science, engineering, and planning disciplines were invited to participate in the inaugural hackathon: CART Codes 2024. Inaugural Research Showcase of the Climate Action Research for Transportation Network

February 9, 2024

The effects of climate change are having increasingly severe consequences across the country. Recent extreme weather events, including wildfires, flooding, and record breaking snowfalls are stark examples of the growing severity of the climate crises. As of 2022, the transportation sector accounts for 24% of Canada's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Urgent actions needs to be taken to reach the federal governments goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2025. To accomplish this goal, an all hands-on deck approach is needed. With this in mind, the CART Network was established. Read more about the inaugural research showcase here. (Halifax, N.S.)
