As an African Nova Scotian woman, many of Wanda Thomas Bernard's (1953 – present) “firsts” — such as becoming Dal’s first African Nova Scotian tenure-track hire in 1990 — reflect barriers she’s had to push against. But in the process, she’s become an inspirational, transformational leader in her field, and at the university. With many awards to her name, in 2016 she started an exciting new chapter when she became the first female African Nova Scotian to be appointed to the Canadian Senate.
