Academic Assistance for FASS Students
FASS students are welcome to visit Dr. Becca Babcock, Assistant Dean of Student Matters, for academic advice or help with university regulations and policies. Come and ask Dr. Babcock about academic dismissals and probation, waiver requests, grade changes, or what to do if your grades aren't what you'd hoped they would be.
Wednesday Drop-Ins:
Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Office of the Dean, room 3030 of the Marion McCain Arts and Social Sciences Building.

Beagle at the Bissett
There are only two more chances to meet Luna the Beagle this term!
Monday, April 15 and Monday, April 22 from 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Bissett Student Success Centre (4th floor Student Union Building) with Luna the Therapy Dog.
Come and talk to FASS Assistant Dean Student Matters Dr. Becca Babcock or an academic advisor from the Bissett Centre, and get to know Luna the Beagle while you're there!
Luna is a St John Ambulance Therapy Dog. She provides comfort and companionship. No medical or psychiatric services are offered during these sessions. For mental health support, please visit the Mental Health Services at Dalhousie's Student Health and Wellness.
Allergy warning: a dog will be present.
Note - There will be no Beagle at the Bissett on Monday, April 8. Monday, April 22 is the last planned Beagle at the Bissett for this academic year.
Clan Ramsey of Nova Scotia Essay Prize
The Clan Ramsay of Nova Scotia Essay Prize competition provides an annual prize to the Dalhousie University student registered with the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences who has written the best paper dealing with (any aspect of) the influence of Scottish culture within Canada (first preference will be given to papers dealing with the influence of Scottish culture within Nova Scotia). This award was established by the Clan Ramsay in Nova Scotia in recognition of the contribution of George Ramsay, 19th earl of Dalhousie, founder of Dalhousie University.
Prize for this year (2024): $1000.00
Deadline: Monday, April 22, 2024
Students who wish to submit an essay as an entry to this competition are to send their essays, along with a brief note of nomination from their professor indicating which course this essay was written for and whether or not the professor approves the submission of this essay to the contest OR the professor can submit the essay and note of nomination/approval on the student's behalf.

Leon & Rose Zitner Prize
Applications are open for the 2024 Zitner Prize! Students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies, including professional programs, within Faculties of Medicine, Health, Dentistry, and Arts & Social Sciences are eligible to apply.
The deadline to apply is May 15th , 2024.
The prize amount foro 2024 is $5,000!
This is a prize for outstanding contributions to citizen knowledge and community engagement in the area of health, broadly defined, including yet not limited to personal, collective, social, structural, environmental, clinical, spiritual, biopsychosocial, cultural, and political dimensions of well-being. FASS Students Win Impact Awards
The Dalhousie Impact Awards is an annual event hosted by the DSU in collaboration with Dalhousie University, to recognize outstanding individuals and student groups that impact our community.
This year's Impact Awards included several students from FASS, including:
Kaitlin McNeil (BA student in Spanish with Minor in Law, Justice and Society) was awarded one of the Residence Life Leadership Awards.
Patricia Porto de Barros Ayaz (PhD student in Political Science) was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Student Award.
Reagan Lindsay-Kereluik (BA student in Law, Justice and Society with Minors in Management and Economics) was awarded the Faculty Leadership Award for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

Migration and Identity in Europe and Canada (POLI3820 / EURO3100 / CANA3000)
Intensive, for-credit, Dal summer course open to students at Dal/other Canadian universities/internationally for a unique learning experience.
Unique combination of seminars, guest lectures, hands-on research projects and field trips, including classroom sessions at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21.
Topics covered include: Immigration policy: comparing Canada and Europe; Multiculturalism: Canadian and European perspectives; Identity politics in Europe and Canada; Nova Scotian local communities: case studies of migration and identity.
Speakers include specialists and practitioners from varying backgrounds, with core Dal instructors: Kiran Banerjee (Political Science), Melanie Smith(Sociology and Social Anthropology) and Ruben Zaiotti (Political Science).
Are you writing -- or did you submit last term -- a paper on some aspect of the European Union, either an individual member country or the EU as a whole? The Jean Monnet European Centre of Excellence is offering itsannual award of $200 for the best student essayon any aspect of the EU, so send along your submission by 30th April.

Dal is hosting its first AI Symposium — an engaging forum dedicated to exploring the latest developments in artificial intelligence and machine learning. The symposium will feature talks from AI leaders, in-depth discussions, and networking opportunities.
There is an open call for poster presentations, inviting submissions on AI topics, with a deadline of Saturday, April 20, 2024. The event promises to be a hub for AI knowledge exchange.
Tickets are available on Eventbrite. The symposium will be held at the Student Union Building in Halifax on Thursday, May 9, 2024 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (AT).

Pathway to Stay - Preparing international students for employment
Pathway to Stay is a free program for currently registered international students at Dalhousie and NSCC. The program is designed for international students in undergraduate programs who are looking to stay and work in Nova Scotia after graduation. This program, which will run until July, 2024, is brought to you in partnership with Business + Higher Education Roundtable, and with the support from the Government of Canada, Dalhousie University, and Nova Scotia Community College. We are still accepting registrations. Don’t miss your opportunity to access webinars, workshops, and opportunities to meet potential employers! The awards are presented annually to faculty and staff members to acknowledge outstanding support for students outside of teaching. Surveys for Students
Share your opinion - gain a chance to win prizes!
The Student Transition Survey is for first year students (who started Dal in Fall 2023) to improve services and programs, including orientation. For completing it, students will be entered to win 1 of 2 Apple Watches, 1 of 2 iPads and 1 of 3 $500 prizes on their Dal Card. Access the survey at this link.
The Advising Services Survey is for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year undergrad students. The results of this survey will be used to develop a University-wide Advising Framework and to better advising supports for students. For completing the survey, students will be entered in to win 1 of 2 $200 prizes on their Dal Card. Access the survey at this link.

Office of Sustainability
Dalhousie’s Office of Sustainability is running its annual Campus Sustainability and Transportation Survey and is seeking your input to make the University more sustainable. You will help the Office improve existing programs and implement new initiatives. The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete, and we are looking for responses from all students, faculty, and staff at Dalhousie University campuses.
At the end of the survey, you will be given the option to enter a draw to win one of five (5) $100 transfers to your DalCard. DalCard is accepted at campus food/retail locations and some Halifax based stores for food purchases like groceries.
