MMM alum tackles plastic pollution

Thursday, June 8 was World Ocean Day. Master of Marine Management alum Kristal Ambrose has fought to reduce plastic pollution in her home country of The Bahamas, with her efforts resulting in a single-use plastics ban in 2020. Read this Dal News story for more on Kristal, who is now working toward a PhD at the World Maritime University's WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute in Sweden.

DAL Magazine: Spring/Summer 2023 edition

The Spring/Summer 2023 edition of DAL Magazine was published this week, featuring stories on the Transforming Climate Action research program, the future of solar energy, alumni profiles, and more. Read the issue online or find a print copy at campus newsstands. 

Equity Champion program for faculty and hiring managers

The Faculty of Science has partnered with the Faculty of Open Learning and Career Development to offer a series of courses leading to an equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) certificate. Interested faculty members and hiring managers are invited to register for a four-part training program that leads to an EDI certificate and recognition as an Equity Champion. The four courses included in the training program consist of Understanding EDI: An Organization ImperativeInclusive Communications in the WorkplaceOptimizing Diverse Team Performance, and Strategies for Implementing EDI Initiatives

New date: Diving into Shark Conservation & Research in Nova Scotia

Previously scheduled for June 8, the Faculty of Science's Diving into Shark Conservation & Research in Nova Scotia panel discussion will now be held on Thursday, June 22 at 6 p.m. ADT in the atrium of the Steele Ocean Sciences Building. This year's discussion welcomes subject matter experts for an in-depth conversation exploring shark conservation and research in Nova Scotia. Guest speakers include Kirsti Burnett (BSc'15), Dr. Chris Harvey-Clark, Dr. Manuel Dureuil (PhD'19) and Dr. Fred Whoriskey. The panel will be moderated by BSc student Vanessa Schiliro. Falling Walls Lab pitch competition: Win a trip to Berlin

Dalhousie University is bringing the Falling Walls Lab pitch competition to Atlantic Canada for a second year. Open to current undergraduate and graduate students and early-career professionals, the competition calls for participants to pitch their ideas and innovations to make the world a better place. Last year, chemistry PhD students Sarah Martell and Tina Taskovic advanced out of the regional competition and earned spots in the global finals in Berlin, Germany. The deadline to apply for a place in the 2023 regional competition is June 21, 2023. Learn more, watch highlights of last year’s pitches, and see how to apply in this Dal News story.

Mitacs Invention to Innovation (i2I) program 

Applications are now open for the Mitacs Invention2Innovation Skills Training Program. This academic-style program opens new career pathways for graduate-level researchers in science or engineering interested in commercialization.

Invention2Innovation is offered virtually by Simon Fraser University in partnership with Dal Innovates and is part-time over eight-months starting September 2023. Only 10 positions are available for Atlantic researchers so don’t delay in submitting your interest. Learn more and apply by July 4, 2023 on the Dal Innovates website.
