Dal Science Communities: Launched in September 2020

Dal Science from a Distance
It’s safe to say that the transition to online education in response to the COVID-19 pandemic has led many members of the Dalhousie on a learning curve. For Medical Sciences student Laith AlHadeed, this shift is another part of why his time at Dalhousie has been so unique.

Dal Science instructors create virtual field trips for fall semester
Eighteen months ago, Mike Young, a senior instructor in Dalhousie’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, bought a drone to start collecting images and videos of the unique field sites he visits in his courses. Young, who teaches second- and fourth-year field geology courses in the Faculty of Science, wanted some ways to provide his students a more immersive introduction to field trips prior to actually going to the field.

Dalhousie University Biodiversity
Earth and environmental student, Leah Fulton spent her summer developing  guided online nature walks on campus. Her project focused on some of the interesting trees on campus and is an alternative to our urban nature walks that were held last year at lunchtimes on campus. The goal of this initiative is to connect students, staff, and faculty to nature on the Studley Campus through virtual challenges and nature walks. The slides showcase guided walks have been curated by program coordinators, Susan Gass and Lara Gibson. This story map has been curated by MMM student Leah Fulton. This project is funded by the Dalhousie Workplace Wellness Grant.
