2024-2025 FASS Essay Competition

The FASS Essay Competition is an annual contest for students registered at Dalhousie University.  There are three competitions, each with a first place prize (this year) of $7,000:  The Irving and Jeanne Glovin Award, the Mushkat Memorial Essay Prize and the Halifax Overseas Club Essay Prize.  Contest deadline for the 2024-2025 academic year is Monday, February 24, 2025 at 4:30 p.m.

Click this link to find further details on scholarships and awards, including how to apply for the Mohini Mathur Memorial Bursary in Indian Studies - This bursary will be awarded to a student registered as a Dalhousie University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences student (BA, MA or PhD) with a sincere and demonstrated interest in pursuing the study of Indian thought and ideas, these can include (but are not limited to) Indian philosophical systems, Hinduism or any branch of Hindu Religion, the Sanskrit language, Indian literature, or other traditions of India's intellectual heritage. The amount of this year's bursary is $1000.

Also - find details of the Clan Ramsey of Nova Scotia Prize - an annual prize to the Dalhousie University student registered with the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences who has written the best paper dealing with (any aspect of) the influence of Scottish culture within Canada (first preference will be given to papers dealing with the influence of Scottish culture within Nova Scotia). This award was established by the Clan Ramsay in Nova Scotia in recognition of the contribution of George Ramsay, 19th earl of Dalhousie, founder of Dalhousie University. The amount of this year's prize is $1000.

Advising for FASS Students

FASS students are welcome to visit Dr. Becca Babcock, Assistant Dean of Student Matters, for academic advice or help with university regulations and policies. Come and ask Dr. Babcock about academic dismissals and probation, waiver requests, grade changes, or what to do if your grades aren't what you'd hoped they would be. 

In-Person or Online Meetings by Appointment:

Wednesday Drop-Ins: 

Wednesdays from 12 p.m. (noon) to 4:00 p.m. in the Office of the Dean, room 3030 of the Marion McCain Arts and Social Sciences Building. 

Beagle at the Bissett

Mondays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (noon)  in the Bissett Student Success Centre (4th floor Student Union Building) with Luna the Therapy Dog.

Come and talk to Dr. Babcock or an academic advisor from the Bissett Centre, and get to know Luna the Beagle while you're there! 


Luna is a St John Ambulance Therapy Dog. She provides comfort and companionship. No medical or psychiatric services are offered during these sessions. For mental health support, please visit the Mental Health Services at Dalhousie's Student Health and Wellness. 
Allergy warning: a dog will be present. 
 

Research ethics office hours for FASS researchers

Drop-in to speak to research ethics staff about your research project.

If you work with human participants in your research and have questions about research ethics, meet one-on-one with staff from the research ethics office. We are here to help as you prepare your application, or if you need any information about the process or anything at all related to research ethics. Office hours are held the first Thursday of the month.

ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM FASS DEPARTMENTS, PROGRAMS, & STUDENT SOCIETIES

Dalhousie Arts and Social Sciences Society (DASSS)

In collaboration with DSS (Dalhousie Science Society),DASSS will be hosting a trivia night on Thursday, February 6th, 2025, at 6pm in room 1011 of the Rowe Management building. Please register here.

DASSS's new office hours for the 2025 winter semester will be Tuesdays and Fridays from 1pm-2pm in room 2013 of the Marion McCain. We're available for any questions or support you may need!

All FASS societies are now able to apply for funding through DASSS for the '25 winter semester. Applications will be open until March 1st, 2025. Societies can apply via this link

DASSS will also be hosting a Meet the Dean event on Monday March 3rd, 2025, from 12pm-1pm in the fireplace lounge (room 1151) of the Marion McCain Building. This is a one-hour drop-in style event open to anyone who is interested!

Book launch to celebrate the publication of Dalhousie Assistant Professor of Russian Studies, Brett Winestock's brand new book

Please join us on Wednesday, February 5, 5-7 pm, for a reception and panel discussion to celebrate the publication of Brett Winestock's brand new book, Written for the Drawer: Leonid Tsypkin, Uncensored Literature, and Soviet Jewishness. 

We will meet in the Classics Library, 1184 McCain.

The author will be in conversation with Prof. Ann Komaromi (University of Toronto) and Prof. Denis Kozlov (Dal History). Our discussion will be of interest to anyone interested in censorship and intellectual life under authoritarianism.

Réseau Santé is hosting a French board game night and we will be attending! Bring your friends to the Bulwark Cider House (1518 Dresden Row) from 6:30 pm to 8pm on Friday, February 7th for a fun night of games and a casual French environment to practice speaking and listening!

We have two Café events this month! On Tuesday, February 11th and Tuesday, February 25th we will be in the French Department lounge (McCain 1114) from 10am-12pm. Free coffee, tea, croissants, and great bilingual conversation available for all!
 

"Decolonizing through Literature"
A special interdisciplinary event commemorating African Heritage Month.

Come and listen to music, hear a presentation by Dr. Raymond Mopoho (French Department Chair), attend a chat with Dr. George Elliott Clarke (the famous Africadian poet and playwright), the Hon. Mayann Francis (first African Nova Scotian Lieutenant Governor) and Dr. Harvey Amani Whitfield, (Centennial Carnegie Chair in the History of Slavery in Canada). Cultural food provided by the Dalhousie Black Students Society and other partnerships will also be featured.

A talk by Maria Coletta McLean (Seneca College), author of My Father Came From Italy and recipient of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for her contribution to the Canadian literary landscape in 2022. This talk discusses the author’s journey as a writer, from the university years as a ‘mature student’ to travelling to Italy for the first time, and from writing the memoir My Father Came From Italy to being a consultant for the adaptation of this book into a movie.
