Dal Science Spotlight: Call for submissions

Over the past four weeks, we have highlighted some of the outstanding instructors and advisors in the Faculty of Science, as nominated by their students and colleagues. There are many more who are deserving of recognition, so we wanted to remind you to fill out our Dal Science Spotlight nomination form. The nomination process is quick and easy, and submissions can be made by students, faculty, and staff. Self-nominations from instructors and advisors are welcome, too.

The seventh episode of the fifth season of the Sciographies podcast features Dr. Kevin Hewitt, a professor in the Department of Physics and Atmospheric Science and the Faculty of Science's associate dean, equity and inclusion. Next week: Ransom A. Myers Lecture in Science & Society

Students, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to attend the 16th annual Ransom A. Myers Lecture in Science and Society on Thursday, Nov. 2. The lecture series is organized by the family, colleagues and former students of the late Ransom A. Myers, a renowned Dalhousie marine biologist and conservationist who died in 2007. 

Titled Fires, floods, and hurricanes: How can we thrive in our new climate reality?, the lecture features the following speakers:

  • Alex Cadel, Climate Services Specialist for Nova Scotia, Climatlantic
  • Melissa Labrador, Pemsik Conservation Mosaic Project Lead and Senior L'nu Conservation and Climate Change Advisor for Oceans North
  • Shannon Miedema, Director of Environment and Climate Change, City of Halifax
  • Dr. Danika Van Proosdij, Director, TransCoastal Adaptations: Centre for Nature-Based Solutions at Saint Mary's University

Advance registration is not required. The lecture can also be accessed online via Zoom at this link. A reception and discussion with the audience will be held following the lecture.

Dalhousie Science Society Research Mixer

Students interested in exploring undergraduate research opportunities are invited to attend the Dalhousie Science Society’s annual Research Mixer on Wednesday, Nov. 8. Representatives from every department will be in attendance to talk about research that is happening at Dal and how students can get involved. Details will also be provided on how to apply for Undergraduate Summer Research Awards.

Registration is required - please RSVP to attend. Light refreshments will be served. Please email DSS@dal.ca with any questions, or contact the Dalhousie Science Society on Instagram.

Saturday: Dal Tigers basketball in support of the United Way

This Saturday, support Dal’s United Way campaign while cheering on the Dalhousie Tigers men’s and women’s basketball teams as they host the Cape Breton Capers. Faculty and staff tickets are $5, or $10 per family, with all proceeds supporting the United Way. Admission is free for students with a DalCard. The women’s game starts at 6:00 p.m. at the Dalplex fieldhouse, with the men’s game at 8:00 p.m. See complete details on the Dal events calendar.

Host labs wanted for Dalhousie Integrated Science Program research projects

The Dalhousie Integrated Science Program (DISP) is seeking host labs to supervise nine to 10-week (three hours per week) winter term research projects for small groups of DISP students. Projects can be supervised by faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, or graduate students. Interested supervisors are asked to fill out this expression of interest form by Friday, Nov. 3. Fall 2023 seminars: Department of Economics

The Department of Economics holds departmental seminars on Friday afternoons from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. in room 2198 of the Marion McCain Arts and Social Sciences Building. Seminars are open to all interested students, faculty and staff. The next scheduled seminar takes place on Friday, Nov. 3 and features a presentation from Nicholas Lawson (Université du Québec à Montréal) titled "Passing the Buck(s): Welfare-Improving International Emission-Reduction Subsidies." Learn more and see the fall 2023 schedule on the Economics website.
