Marine Affairs professor receives inaugural Dr. Anne Marie Ryan Community Growth Award

Dr. Megan Bailey of the Marine Affairs Program is among the first recipients of the Dr. Anne Marie Ryan Community Gowth Award, launched by Dalhousie earlier this year in honour of the late Dr. Anne Marie Ryan, a University Teaching Fellow in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences who passed away unexpectedly last year. The award recognizes individuals and groups dedicated to building a better community through education, learning and outreach. Dr. Tom Ue of the Department of English also received the award. Meet a Scientist event: Wednesday, August 9

The Faculty of Science is hosting a ‘Meet a Scientist’ event on Wednesday, August 9 at the Halifax Central Library to showcase the exciting research taking place in our departments and programs. Members of the public, alumni, and current and future students are invited to meet members of our vibrant research community. Attendees who RSVP in advance can meet our scientists in a speed dating-style format starting at 3:30 p.m., while drop-ins are welcome starting at 4:30 p.m. Please share this event with anyone who may be interested! Attendees can learn more and sign up at this link.

We have also produced a video series featuring scientists who will be in attendance. Visit our YouTube channel and social media accounts (Twitter/X and Instagram) to watch clips of Drs. Kristina Boerder, Jason Brown, Miao Zhang and more discussing their research.

Summer Research Contest: Aug. 31 deadline

Undergraduate students who have received a 2023 summer research award are invited to enter the Faculty of Science's summer research contest by summarizing their research in a three-minute, narrated PowerPoint presentation. Dal Bookstore gift cards will be awarded to the top three students. Submissions are due by August 31. Highlight the work of instructors and advisors in the Dal Science Spotlight

Do you know of an instructor or advisor who is doing great work inside and outside of the classroom? Highlight their contributions by filling out our brief Dal Science Spotlight nomination form. Submissions are welcome from all members of the Dal Science community, including self-nominations from instructors and advisors. 

2024 Science as Art calendar photo contest

Submissions for the 2024 Science as Art calendar photo contest are now being accepted. Each year, the Science As Art calendar highlights the beauty of science in everyday life through photos submitted by Dal Science alumni, students, faculty and staff. Learn more about the calendar and see how to submit your photo. Submissions are due by August 31.

Winter 2024 Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Program applications

Applications for winter 2024 placements as part of the Queen Elizabeth Scholarships (QES) program are now open until August 23.

The QES program offers undergraduate students the chance to complete a funded internship for credit at the Cape Eleuthera Institute in The Bahamas. Applicants should have an interest and academic background in environmental science, sustainability, marine science or a related field, and be in at least their third year of studies at the time of the internship placement. Visit Dal’s QES website for complete details on the three types of internships that can be applied for (marine research and conservation, sustainable agriculture, and sustainable systems). Any questions can be directed to Dr. Tarah Wright (tarah.wright@dal.ca), coordinator of the QES Program at Dal.
