Chemistry grad earns Governor General's Gold Medal
In time for spring Convocation, the Faculty of Graduate Studies presents the Governor General's Gold Medals to the year's most outstanding master's graduates. Master of Science in Chemistry graduate Toren Hynes is this year's receipient in the Sciences and Engineering category. Thursday, June 22: Diving into Shark Conservation & Research in Nova Scotia
Previously scheduled for June 8, the Faculty of Science's Diving into Shark Conservation & Research in Nova Scotia panel discussion will now be held on Thursday, June 22 at 6 p.m. ADT in the atrium of the Steele Ocean Sciences Building. This year's discussion welcomes subject matter experts for an in-depth conversation exploring shark conservation and research in Nova Scotia. Panelists include Kirsti Burnett (BSc'15), Dr. Chris Harvey-Clark, Dr. Manuel Dureuil (PhD'19) and Dr. Fred Whoriskey. The panel will be moderated by BSc student Vanessa Schiliro. Study Skills Coach positions: Studying for Success Program
The Studying for Success Program with the Bissett Student Success Centre is hiring Study Skills Coaches in chemistry,economics/management and engineering. These part-time positions involve 4-8 hours of work per week from September 2023 to April 2024. Candidates should be graduate students or upper-year undergrads. June 21 deadline: Falling Walls Lab pitch competition
Dalhousie University is bringing the Falling Walls Lab pitch competition to Atlantic Canada for a second year. Open to current undergraduate and graduate students and early-career professionals, the competition calls for participants to pitch their ideas and innovations to make the world a better place. Last year, chemistry PhD students Sarah Martell and Tina Taskovic advanced out of the regional competition and earned spots in the global finals in Berlin, Germany. Monday: Inclusive STEM Showcase for faculty and course instructors
Hosted by the Faculty of Science Summer Institute, Monday's Inclusive STEM Showcase includes a series of short presentations by Faculty of Science course instructors in STEM on effective and actionable strategies for promoting inclusivity in and outside of the classroom. Presentations will be followed by a Q&A and general group discussion. Light refreshments will be served. Interested faculty and course instructors can register to attend by completing this form by Saturday, June 17.

Third Century Promise: Annual Progress Report and Summer Sociable
The Dal community is invited to join members of Dal’s senior leadership team on Thursday, June 22 for the Annual Progress Report on the 2021-2026 strategic plan, Third Century Promise. That event will be followed by the Summer Sociable (formerly known as Strawberry Jam) on the Studley Quad in front of the Henry Hicks building. Office of Sustainability: Green Labs program
The Office of Sustainability will be taking registrations this summer for the second cohort of its Green Labs program. Dahousie's over 1,350 laboratory spaces are four to five times more energy-intensive than a classroom, meaning more energy and water waste. Mitacs Invention to Innovation (i2I) program
Applications are now open for the Mitacs Invention2Innovation Skills Training Program. This academic-style program opens new career pathways for graduate-level researchers in science or engineering interested in commercialization.
Invention2Innovation is offered virtually by Simon Fraser University in partnership with Dal Innovates and is part-time over eight-months starting September 2023. Only 10 positions are available for Atlantic researchers so don’t delay in submitting your interest. Learn more and apply by July 4, 2023 on the Dal Innovates website.
