2024-2025 FASS Essay Competition

The FASS Essay Competition is an annual contest for students registered at Dalhousie University.  There are three competitions, each with a first place prize (this year) of $7,000 each:  The Irving and Jeanne Glovin Award, the Mushkat Memorial Essay Prize and the Halifax Overseas Club Essay Prize.  Contest deadline for the 2024-2025 academic year is Monday, February 24, 2025 at 4:30 p.m.

Call for Nominations - FASS Award for Excellence in Teaching

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is committed to excellence in teaching. It has established a teaching award that honours, each year, a faculty member who has made an outstanding contribution to teaching, mentoring, and serving the students of the Faculty. This award is intended above all to underline the fundamental importance of effective and/or innovative pedagogy. Learn more about this award and the nomination process here.
Please note - the deadline for nominations is January 31, 2025. 

Academic Assistance for FASS Students

Advising for FASS Students

FASS students are welcome to visit Dr. Becca Babcock, Assistant Dean of Student Matters, for academic advice or help with university regulations and policies. Come and ask Dr. Babcock about academic dismissals and probation, waiver requests, grade changes, or what to do if your grades aren't what you'd hoped they would be. 

Wednesday Drop-Ins: 

Wednesdays from 12 p.m. (noon) to 4:00 p.m. in the Office of the Dean, room 3030 of the Marion McCain Arts and Social Sciences Building.

2nd Annual FASS Holiday Food Drive

Faculty, staff and students across campus are invited to participate in the second annual Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Holiday Food Drive for the Dalhousie Student Union (DSU) Food Bank in Halifax.

Drop off your donations of non-persihable food items in the cardboard boxes that can be found in the Dean's Office (McCain 3030) and in departments across the Faculty until Monday, December 9.

Watch - Interview with two FASS students

Check out this great interview with two current Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences students - Kriti Maini (who is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts with Combined Honours in Political Science and History) and Jeremie Boudreau (a Bachelor of Music student with a concentration in Composition) - who shared some details about their Dal FASS experience and why future post-secondary students should consider studying in the humanities, social sciences, and performing arts at Dalhousie University!

Each year Fountain School students collaboratively bring to life numerous stage productions, music ensemble concerts, and a free noon-hour live music series guided by faculty and inspired by guest artists.

Jean Monnet European Union Centre of Excellence (JMEUCE)

EU STUDY TOUR (11th-29th May) & INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME (optional: June-July)

APPLY NOW to earn course credit next spring... in Europe!  Exciting opportunity to visit EU institutions in Brussels, Luxembourg and Frankfurt on an intensive, immersive study tour  with other students from across Canada.  Additional option for two-month internship in Europe afterwards.  Partial funding is available through the JMEUCE for a limited number of students.  For details, check out the tour information on UVic's website or contact jmeuce@dal.ca with questions.  Application deadline: 9th December.

Apply to become a 2025 OpenThinker

Applications for the 2025 OpenThink cohort are now open! PhD students with an interest in sharing their knowledge beyond Dalhousie are encouraged to apply. OpenThinkers receive a scholarship of $1,500 and are equipped with the communication skills and platform to reach public audiences and inform discourse.
