Thomson: An Accidental Statistician - Queen’s University.\nAfter receiving a Bachelors in Math and Physics from Acadia University in 1965\,  he earned a Masters and PhD in Electrical Engineering from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn\, now Tandon School of Engineering of New York University\,  while working full-time in New Jersey. The maritimer moved to New Jersey to work at Bell Labs on communication systems. While there\, Thomson created the Multitaper Method for Spectral Estimation. After retiring from Bell Labs\, he became a Professor in Statistics at Queen’s University\, where he has worked for 17.5 years\, for 14 of them holding the Canada Research Chair in Statistics and Signal Processing. Since retiring in July 2018 he has been Professor Emeritus\, and continued to supervise graduate students  and to work on various research projects.
