Medicine Unbundled and the Politics of Disease: The Story of Indigenous Health Care in Canada
In Medicine Unbundled: Dispatches from the Indigenous Frontlines Gary Geddes interviews Indigenous Elders willing to share their experiences of segregated health care, including their treatment in the Nanaimo Indian Hospital, the Charles Camsell Indian Hospital in Edmonton, and several similar institutions throughout the country. These facilities— established less to help the Indigenous sick than to keep them separate from a racist population—were notorious sites of abuse and neglect.
Dr. Gary Geddes has written and edited more than 50 books of poetry, fiction, drama,non-fiction, criticism, translation, and anthologies and won a dozen national and international literary awards, including the Commonwealth Poetry Prize, the Lt-Governor’s Award for Literary Excellence, and the Gabriela Mistral Prize.
