Dal experts discuss Canada in the age of Trump

In a piece published in Dal News, six experts from across Dal, including Dr. Teresa Cyrus of the Department of Economics, weighted in on Canada's changing relationship with the United States in President Donald Trump's second term. Each spoke to a particular area of expertise - tariffs and trade, in the case of Dr. Cyrus. Read the full article and watch a short video with the six faculty.

Today: DISP Research Symposium poster fair

All are invited to attend the 32nd annual Dalhousie Integrated Science Program (DISP) Research Symposium poster session on Friday, April 4 from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. in the 3rd floor foyer of the LSC (above Tim Hortons). First-year DISP students will share their team research projects completed through Dalhousie host labs this year.

Student leaders honoured at Impact Awards

Last week, student leaders and societies were recognized at the Impact Awards, Dal's annual celebration of student achievement inside and outside of the classroom. Read a full list of the students and societies recognized, incuding Science's Faculty Leadership Award winners Nathan Cromwell Tesfazion (undergraduate) and Tiara Mulder (graduate), and Team Visual Assist, the group of mostly psychology and neuroscience students and alumni who received the President's Award for the Advancement of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (EDIA).

As well, Environmental Science and Environment, Sustainability, and Society student Mariam Knakriah was one of four 2025 Board of Governors' Award recipients recognized at the Impact Awards. Meet Mariam and the three other award winners in this Dal News story.

Marine Affairs prof explores changing commercial fisheries

What drives people to make their living in the volatile commercial fishing industry? Last Boat on the Lake, a new documentary from Dr. Hannah Harrison of the Marine Affairs Program, explores life in the changing Great Lakes region commercial fisheries. The hourlong film is available to watch on Youtube. For more, read our Dal News story on the film's five-year production process and Dr. Harrison's plan to continue researching the industry.

Undergraduate Research Prize: Student applications due April 11

Eligible students graduating this spring are invited to apply for the Faculty of Science Undergraduate Research Prize, which is awarded annually upon graduation to students who have made a substantial commitment and contribution to research during their undergraduate programs. There are two steps to the application process:

  • Students should submit a completed application form and letters of support from supervising faculty members to their designated department contact by April 11.
  • Department contacts should then forward application forms and letters of support to the Dean’s Office contact (Nirali.Patel@dal.ca) by April 18

Judges wanted: Canada-Wide Science Fair

Youth Science Canada is searching for judges (with PhDs or professional qualifications, or master’s degrees and some experience, including PhD candidates) from all STEM disciplines that would like to be involved in the 2025 Canada-Wide Science Fair from May 31 – June 7 at the University of New Brunswick. Students benefit from mentorship from STEM professionals or trainees.  You can help us to support and inspire the next generation of STEM scholars!
