School for Resource and Environmental Studies joins Faculty of Science
On April 1, 2023, the start of the new fiscal year, the School for Resource and Environmental Studies (SRES) officially moved from the Faculty of Management to the Faculty of Science, bringing with it nearly 50 years of environmentally focused education. Biology PhD graduate earns Dalhousie Doctoral Thesis Award
Department of Biology PhD graduate Dr. Suchinta Arif has been selected as the 2023 recipient of the Dalhousie Doctoral Thesis Award in the Engineering, Medical Sciences and Natural Sciences category. Presented annually by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, the awards recognize the top theses submitted by doctoral students. Dr. Arif’s thesis focused on methods for causal inference that can be broadly used across observational ecological studies to generate more robust conclusions about relationships in nature. Women in STEM panel discussion
Next week, the Dalhousie Science Scholars and Leaders Program (DSSLP) is co-hosting a documentary screening and panel discussion focused on the challenges faced by women in STEM. Members of the Dalhousie community are invited to attend a panel discussion of the 2020 film Picture a Scientist, which can be watched through Netflix and via Dalhousie’s Films on Demand database. A panel of graduate student Taylor Caddell, postdoctoral fellow Dr. Lisette Delgado and professor Dr. Sophia Stone will discuss the film and issues related to equity, diversity and inclusion in science. Dr. Erin Bertrand will serve as moderator. Registration is not required to attend the panel discussion.

Dalhousie University Conference on University Teaching and Learning: May 3-4
The 25th annual Dalhousie Conference on University Teaching and Learning (DCUTL) aims to promote the importance of university teaching and learning among faculty, staff and graduate students. This year’s conference will be held in-person and virtually at the Kenneth C. Rowe Management Building on May 3 and 4. Visit the Centre for Learning and Teaching website for complete details. Open Dialogue Live: Accelerating ocean research at Dalhousie
The next edition of Open Dialogue Live discusses the ocean’s impact on our climate and Dalhousie’s plan to bring the ocean to the centre of global climate action. This event is free and open to the public and is moderated by Dr. Anya Waite with a panel of Dr. Katja Fennel, Dr. Mike Smit and Dr. Will Burt. Upcoming deadine: Undergraduate Research Prize
Eligible students are invited to apply for the Faculty of Science Undergraduate Research Prize, which is awarded annually upon graduation to students who have made a substantial commitment and contribution to research during their undergraduate programs. A letter of support is required from faculty members who have supervised the student’s research. Students should submit a completed application form to their designated department contact by April 10. Departments should then forward application forms and letters of support to the Dean’s Office (ADAScience@dal.ca) by April 14. Complete eligibility details and the application form can be found on the Faculty of Science myDal site (login required).
Research Camp from Dal Libraries
Registration is now open for Research Camp from Dalhousie Libraries for research assistants, teaching assistants and graduate students. Research Camp is designed to take you through the elements of research from basic to advanced through a combination of asynchronous modules on Brightspace and live online sessions on Teams. Learn more and see how to self-register in Brightspace before the course begins on May 15.
